"This is the practical test for the Junior Breeder Qualification Examination," the referee announced, his voice steady and authoritative. "Each participant may use three Pokemon. You are allowed one substitution during the match. The battle ends when one side's Pokemon are all unable to fight."
John and Charles nodded in acknowledgment, their eyes locking briefly in a moment of mutual respect—or was it veiled rivalry? Both reached for their Pokeballs in unison, the polished spheres gleaming in the light. With a synchronized motion, they hurled them into the air.
In bursts of silver light, two Pokemon materialized on the battlefield.
John's choice was clear: Tyrunt, a rugged little creature with sharp eyes and a jawline that screamed power. At LV 32, it was a strong contender, with its Strong Jaw ability boosting its bite-based moves. Its arsenal of attacks, including Crunch, Rock Slide, and Dragon Tail, made it a versatile pick.
Meanwhile, Charles's selection was Ludicolo. The whimsical, pineapple-hat-wearing Pokemon hopped onto the field, its eccentric dance moves contrasting sharply with Tyrunt's stoic demeanor. Ludicolo's dual Grass and Water typing made it an intriguing opponent, particularly against Tyrunt's Rock-Dragon composition. Neither side seemed to hold a clear type advantage.
The referee raised his hand, signaling the start of the match. "Begin!"
Charles wasted no time. "Ludicolo, Rain Dance!"
Ludicolo clapped its stubby hands together and twirled, summoning dark clouds overhead. Moments later, rain poured down in torrents, soaking the battlefield. Ludicolo's movements became livelier, its ability—most likely Swift Swim or Rain Dish—activating under the rainy conditions. John recognized the strategy immediately. In this weather, Ludicolo's speed and recovery would make it a formidable foe.
Unfazed, John gave his command. "Tyrunt, Crunch!"
Tyrunt roared, black energy crackling around its jaws as it charged forward with remarkable speed. But Charles was ready.
"Ludicolo, Hydro Pump! Now!"
The cheerful Pokemon's demeanor shifted as it unleashed a high-pressure jet of water with incredible force. The stream struck Tyrunt squarely, sending it hurtling backward across the field. The young dragon slammed into the wall behind John with a resounding thud, its strength no match for the relentless assault. As the dust settled, Tyrunt lay still, unable to continue.
"Tyrunt is unable to battle. Ludicolo wins!" the referee declared, his voice tinged with surprise.
John's brow furrowed. That Hydro Pump was far too powerful. From the sheer force, it was clear this Ludicolo wasn't just an average participant in a breeder's exam. A Pokemon capable of such an attack had to be at least LV 50—and this exam was supposed to cap opponents around LV 30. Something was off.
Charles, arms crossed and exuding confidence, smirked at John. He didn't even bother recalling Ludicolo or preparing for a substitution. He wanted John to feel the pressure, to know that this was no ordinary match.
John, however, wasn't one to back down. His lips curled into a wry smile as he reached for his second Pokeball. "Alright, let's turn up the heat."
With a dramatic throw, the Pokeball hit the ground, releasing a thunderous roar as it opened. A massive figure emerged, its sheer weight cracking the battlefield beneath it. Sand whipped into the air, spiraling into a ferocious storm that tore through the artificial rainclouds. The downpour ceased abruptly, replaced by a relentless Sandstorm.
Standing at the eye of the storm was Tyranitar, its colossal frame radiating an aura of raw power. Its red eyes glowed with fury, mirroring the anger in John's own gaze. The battlefield fell silent, save for the howling wind and Tyranitar's heavy breaths.
Charles's smirk faltered ever so slightly. Even with Ludicolo's type advantage, he knew that Tyranitar was no ordinary opponent. Its mere presence exuded dominance, and the sudden shift to Sand Stream neutralized Ludicolo's rainy advantage.
"Tyranitar," John called, his voice steady and commanding, "let's show them what real power looks like."
