The battlefield had turned into a world of chaos—firestorms and ice pillars, lightning strikes and shockwaves that carved trenches into the ground. Every breath drawn was heat and frost colliding, every heartbeat a countdown to catastrophe.
Aaron's laughter echoed above the rumbling battlefield, loud enough to drown the crackling of flames. "Not bad, humans! You've lasted longer than I expected!"
Mia stood amidst the roaring heat, her blade buried in the scorched ground as she gathered her breath. Frost spread beneath her feet, trying to reclaim the burnt soil, but the fire around her kept pushing it back. Every time she lowered the temperature, Aaron's mana surged, nullifying her efforts. The air between them shimmered—a line where ice and flame met, refusing to yield.
Hiro darted through the haze, lightning arcing from his sword. "Then expect more than that!" he shouted, appearing behind Aaron in a burst of speed. His blade cut through the air, slashing diagonally toward the devil's exposed side.
Aaron turned at the last instant, his arm glowing red-hot as he blocked with the back of his gauntlet. Sparks flew, the ground split open, and the shockwave threw both of them back several meters.
Zion's staff pulsed as he cast a reinforcing barrier around the team. "I can't keep this up much longer!" he yelled, his voice nearly lost beneath the storm. "His mana output— it's burning through the shield faster than I can channel!"
Lisa was on her knees, both hands glowing faint green as she tried to heal Hiro's arm where the backlash had singed his skin. "Damn it, even our healing rate can't keep up with this heat. His aura alone is killing our stamina."
Sylvia loosed an enchanted arrow—its tip shining with holy energy—and it sliced through the smoke toward Aaron. But again, his infernal shield absorbed it like mist into fire. The arrow dissolved on impact, the faint sound of shattering glass echoing across the field.
Aaron looked down at the spot where the arrow had struck him and then slowly turned his gaze toward her. "Was that supposed to tickle?"
Sylvia gritted her teeth, sweat trickling down her temples. "He's mocking us."
"He's trying to make you lose focus," Mia said sharply, her icy gaze never leaving Aaron. "Don't fall for it."
"Still so composed," Aaron mused, flames swirling behind him like wings. "You humans really do have fascinating hearts. Fear, hope, defiance… all burning together."
"Keep your philosophy to yourself," Hiro spat, reappearing beside Mia. His eyes were sharp, his body trembling slightly from overuse of mana. "Zion, get ready to reinforce again when I move."
Aaron extended one clawed hand, palm up. "Very well. No more words."
The ground beneath him split open, and a surge of molten fire burst upward, creating a dome of flames. The temperature spiked so violently that Zion's barrier cracked audibly. The devil stepped out of the inferno, armor gleaming like forged steel, eyes burning with violent satisfaction.
Mia reacted instantly. "Hiro!"
Hiro vanished into a bolt of lightning, striking from above while Mia thrust her sword forward. Frost spiraled along the blade, condensing into a massive lance of ice that shot straight toward Aaron.
Aaron raised his arm and caught the attack barehanded. The ice hissed violently, steam pouring out as his molten mana began melting it away. But before it could shatter, Hiro struck from behind, slashing across Aaron's shoulder.
A growl of pain escaped the devil's throat as a streak of blood—dark, almost glowing—splattered onto the ground.
"Got him!" Misha shouted, relief flashing across her face.
But Aaron only chuckled, even as blood dripped from the wound. "Impressive… You actually drew blood." His flames roared higher. "Then allow me to return the favor."
He spun, hurling his arm forward. A torrent of fire erupted like a cannon blast, striking the barrier Zion had raised just in time. The explosion sent everyone flying backward, dust and ash consuming the horizon.
Zion crashed to the ground, gasping, his barrier shattering completely. Lisa and Sylvia tumbled beside him, rolling across the dirt.
When the smoke cleared, only two figures still stood against the devil—Mia and Hiro.
Aaron smiled, slow and cruel. "You're strong, I'll grant you that. But your friends—" his gaze swept over the others "—they're dragging you down."
Hiro's lightning crackled louder, answering the insult. "You talk too much."
Mia's eyes glinted with cold fury. "Say what you want. They've done their part. We're not fighting alone."
Aaron tilted his head. "Oh? Then prove it."
He spread his arms wide, and suddenly, the battlefield trembled again. The ground split apart, and from beneath it, fiery serpents made of pure mana slithered upward—manifestations of his aura. They lashed out toward the resting members of the squad.
"Misha!" Lisa screamed.
But Misha had already leapt into action, slicing through one of the fiery tendrils. The moment her sword connected, the serpent burst into molten shards that exploded outward. She gritted her teeth, taking the hit on her arm, smoke rising from her sleeve.
Zion struggled back to his feet, shouting a desperate incantation. "Arcane Dispel!"
A ripple of azure light spread across the battlefield, weakening the serpents for just a moment—enough for Sylvia and Lisa to shoot and slash them apart. ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ꜰʀᴏᴍ 𝚗𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚕·𝚏𝚒𝚛𝚎·𝚗𝚎𝚝
Aaron watched with faint amusement. "Ah. So the little ones still resist."
"That's what makes us human," Zion growled.
"Then let's see how long that lasts."
He stomped once—and the world ignited. Every serpent reformed, doubling in size. The ground turned crimson, magma flowing through cracks like blood through veins.
"Get back!" Mia shouted. "Everyone behind me!"
She raised her sword high, channeling her mana until frost exploded outward like a blizzard. The flames hissed and retreated slightly as a massive barrier of ice rose, encircling the squad. Steam filled the air, the clash of elements deafening.
For a moment, the world froze again.
Then Aaron walked forward, slow and deliberate, each step melting the ice before his feet.
"Your mana," he said, almost conversationally, "is beautiful. Cold. Defiant. But you're still mortal. You can only delay the inevitable."
Mia steadied her breathing. Her blade trembled—not from fear, but from the sheer strain of maintaining her mana against such overwhelming heat.
"Maybe," she whispered, "but we're not the ones fading yet."
Behind her, Hiro crouched low, lightning gathering like a storm in his palm. Zion's staff flickered weakly but didn't dim. Misha stood guard, protecting Lisa and Sylvia, their eyes locked on Aaron.
No one was willing to retreat.
Aaron paused, eyeing the group—something unreadable passing through his gaze. Perhaps irritation. Perhaps faint respect.
Then he smiled again. "Good. Then stop holding back."
The next instant, he lunged forward.
Flame clashed with frost, lightning with fire, and for the first time since the battle began—no one had the clear advantage.
Every strike was met with equal force, every spell countered by another. The earth groaned under their feet, the sky above burning orange from the sheer energy tearing through the air.
