“Where’s Sean?”
Caroline looked at me with a curious questioning look, I put the potato chips in my mouth while shrugging my shoulders, I wasn’t in the mood to care about her. Caroline stared at me with narrowed eyes of hers, as I glanced at her before turning my attention back to the broadcast of the tennis match that was still going on. Ronald didn’t seem to care, he was focused on watching the game. I went from the living room to the kitchen to get another can of orange juice.
“What happened??”
I nearly dropped my canned orange juice when Caroline was right behind me and asked, I closed the fridge door with my elbow, my body facing her. I shifted from where I opened my canned orange juice and took a sip of it.
“We had a fight this morning, she blamed me for the pregnancy,” I say turning towards the stove behind me.
“What?? Then where is he??”
I shrugged my shoulders in response, I exhaled loudly through my mouth to dispel the sadness and anger that suddenly overtook me. Unlucky! Why does Sean have to act like a coward at a time like this??
“Never mind, I’m not in the mood to talk about it,” I said waving my hand casually, then sipped my canned orange juice, finished it and threw the can away in the style of a basketball player shooting in the trash, and was on target.
“Three points,” I said looking back at Caroline before leaving the woman in the kitchen, I headed for my room on the second floor.
I closed the door and looked at my room, the Red Taylor Swift album cover poster on the wall above my headboard, and some of her concert tickets on the mirror on my dresser. I smiled as my eyes stared at my favorite guitar, I approached it and stroked its peak, all the memories of me doing my profession as a singer flashed through my mind as fleeting flashes. One day I will pass this thing on to my children, I smiled at the thought. Caroline came and took me downstairs for lunch, I saw my mother had joined the dining table I went over to her giving a light kiss on both cheeks, then took my place next to Ronald in front of Caroline.
“Where’s Sean?”
Oh no! I forgot to prepare an excuse when mom asked this. Think Ariana, think. I exhaled trying to calm my nervousness.
“He is on business with his business partner outside, Mam,” I replied then glanced at Mama who seemed to put a spoonful of rice in her mouth, My Inner Goddess folded her arms in front of her chest with an anxious expression while my senses sat while reading a book about maintaining health during pregnancy . No response from mom gave me a sense of relief, my gaze turned to Caroline who was looking at me with her ‘we-must-talk-after-this’ look, I shrugged my shoulders in response. Lunch ended without discussing a word about my problems with Sean, I already told my mom that I was pregnant she looked happy and her melancholic nature was showing. I returned to the apartment after having dinner together, when I arrived at the apartment Sean had just come out of his study accompanied by a woman, I didn’t know the woman he looked surprised when he saw me and the woman who was with him immediately smiled broadly and rushed to me, hugged me, I frowned my forehead. Who is this woman who looks like Camila Cabello??
“Sister-in-law,” she greeted happily, I looked at Sean with my questioning look but he just looked at me with his flat gaze.
“Come on, Rena, I’ll take you to the hotel,” said Sean, the woman named Rena kissed my cheek before she left to follow Sean, I was still stunned and glued to where I was standing. Who is she?? Why does he call me sister-in-law?? I continued walking towards the bedroom, changed my clothes and then into the kitchen looking for a snack. I decided to make a fruit salad after that took a position on the sofa in front of the television, I transferred the broadcast to HBO which is currently showing Resident Evil The Final Chapter. Every now and then I screamed while covering my face with the sofa cushion when a zombie suddenly appeared in a surprising way. Sean came an hour later, I only saw him briefly then focused on the movie I was watching, the door closed and my concentration on watching this movie was broken. How long do we have to be silent like this? It’s torturous, but I feel that he seems selfish in this matter. I finished my fruit salad then went to the kitchen, washed the bowl I used earlier, went back to the living room turned off the television and went to the library, I opened the door and turned on the light then stepped inside to choose a book. My choice fell to Agatha Cristie’s detective series Hercul Poirot, Halloween Party. I lay down on the fluffy rug, a sizable rectangular pillow under my head and I began to read, drowned in the novel that began with someone being killed during a Halloween party at a house.
Until in the middle of the story, drowsiness began to attack me, I decided to fold the corner of the page I’m reading now and then return the book to its original place turning off the light before leaving the room. I yawned on my way to the bedroom, when I opened the door, Sean was sitting on the bed beside him, leaning on the headboard, holding his laptop and busy typing something. I just kept quiet, didn’t say a word, just climbed onto the side of my bed and closed my eyes, positioning my body with my back to him. It seems my mind is still working until a few minutes have passed, my eyes are closed but I haven’t fallen asleep, I feel Sean’s side of sleeping move then I feel him kiss the top of my head then he hugs me as he lies behind me, my smile widens and sleepiness quickly overwhelms me until I fall down asleep.
