Chapter 99: The Architect of Torment
Within the grey, formless hell of the Tsukuyomi, Naruto's friends were strung up on rough-hewn wooden stakes, their faces contorted in silent screams of agony. The air was thick with the scent of fear and despair, a miasma designed to suffocate hope.

Naruto's eyes snapped open. Uchiha Ren stood before him, a smirk playing on his lips, looking utterly at ease in this manufactured nightmare.
"You!" Naruto snarled, straining against the invisible bonds holding him. "You did this! It's all an illusion! I won't fall for it!"
"Illusion?" Ren repeated, his tone light and amused. In his hand, a kunai materialized from nothing. With a casual flick of his wrist, he sent it flying.
Naruto tried to dodge, but his body refused to obey. The blade sank deep into his shoulder. A searing, white-hot pain erupted, so vivid, so *real*, that his breath hitched. A strangled cry was torn from his throat.
"Ah! Wh-why...?" he gasped, staring in disbelief at the hilt protruding from his flesh. "I can feel it... this isn't... this can't just be an illusion!"
"What do you think?" Ren said, another kunai appearing in his hand. He tossed it idly, catching it by the blade.
A memory, a lesson from Kakashi, surfaced through the pain. "No... This is... this is that jutsu... Tsukuyomi!"
"Very good," Ren said, his voice dripping with condescending praise. "You're not as dense as you look. But knowing its name changes nothing. In this space, I control everything. Time, space, mass, sensation... it all bends to my will. So tell me, how do you plan to defeat me here?"
"I don't have to beat you!" Naruto shot back, clinging to the shred of knowledge he had. "Kakashi-sensei said it! This technique only lasts for 72 hours! I just have to outlast you!"
"A commendable theory," Ren conceded, still playing with the kunai. "But flawed. My Tsukuyomi isn't bound by such a paltry limit. This... is eternity. You will leave this place only when I decide to release you. Not a moment sooner."
"Liar! That's impossible!"
"Believe what you wish. It changes nothing about your current... predicament." Ren's smirk widened. He turned from Naruto, his gaze falling on Shikamaru, who was bound to a stake nearby, his eyes wide with terror.
"Now, where were we?"
The kunai in Ren's hand vanished. In its place appeared another, its edge glinting with malicious intent. Without ceremony, Ren drove it into Shikamaru's thigh.
"AGHHH! Naruto! Help me! Please!" Shikamaru's scream was raw and piercing, a sound of pure, undiluted agony.
"Don't listen, don't listen, it's not real!" Naruto chanted, gritting his teeth and trying to look away, but his head was held fast.
"Still think it's fake?" Ren mused. Another kunai appeared. He plunged it into Shikamaru's other leg. Another scream, more desperate than the last, echoed in the void.
"Stop it! STOP IT!" Naruto roared, his own pain forgotten in the face of his friend's suffering.
Ren ignored him. Kunai after kunai materialized and found their mark. Shikamaru's body became a pincushion, his cries growing weaker, devolving into ragged, wet gasps. "Naruto... please... save..."
Naruto squeezed his eyes shut again, but he couldn't block out the sounds. Each whimper, each plea for help, was a hammer blow to his spirit. He felt his control slipping, a red haze of anger beginning to cloud the edges of his vision.
"Oh, he's all out of room," Ren said, his voice clinical, as if commenting on a filled ledger. "Let's move on to someone else."
He appeared next to Choji. "You're a big fellow. You should be able to endure a bit more." The brutal process repeated itself. Kunai after kunai sank into Choji's large body until he, too, was a silent, bleeding wreck.
One by one, Ren worked his way through the male Konoha eleven and the Suna siblings. Shino, Kiba, Lee, Neji, Gaara, Kankuro—each was subjected to the same exquisite, personalized torture, their screams and pleas forming a horrific symphony designed for a single listener: Naruto Uzumaki.
Naruto's mind was fracturing. He knew, intellectually, that this was a genjutsu. But the pain felt real. The fear in his friends' voices was real. The helplessness was utterly, devastatingly real.
