Chapter 1429: The Last Stream
As Kanu unleashed another jet of water from his mouth, he noticed something unsettling, a slight tinge of red in the stream. It didn’t last long, quickly fading back to its usual color, but it was undeniable.
Though he tried to hide it, that single glimpse of red spoke volumes.
From what he’d experienced so far in his brutal clash with the iron-masked werewolf, who he was almost certain now was one of the Ironfangs, Kanu had come to a grim conclusion.
They weren’t going to win this battle.
This werewolf’s strength wasn’t some flashy, godlike power that could level a forest or take down an army with a single blow. No, it was something far more dangerous. It was a quiet, controlled strength, power tempered with skill, and the terrifying stamina to back it up.
The kind of enemy who didn’t need to destroy you all at once.
The kind who would dismantle your entire force, one by one, no matter how long it took. Whether an hour or a whole day, this werewolf wouldn’t stop until they were all gone.
A nightmare in the shape of a man.
Elijah had pushed himself off the ground and scanned the field. Kanu was already locked in close combat again, exchanging powerful, sweeping blows with the Ironfang. One look was enough to tell the difference between them.
And completely unharmed.
‘There’s really nothing we can do to help,’ Elijah realized, gritting his teeth. ‘In this situation, we have to follow what Kanu said. If we don’t… we’ll only get in his way.’
With that bitter truth in his heart, Elijah leapt onto the back of a charging werewolf. Blood only slighty bleeding from the stump where his arm had been, he raised both his one good hand and his transformed rocky limb and slammed them down on the creature’s skull.
“Listen to Kanu!” he shouted, voice cracking with desperation. “Everyone retreat! Get down now, GO!”
The Howler members stationed in the trees had prepared for this. Each had ropes pre-attached, the plan ready in case of a necessary escape.
They jumped one after another, cutting their lines as they landed on the ground, sprinting through the forest.
But they weren’t alone.
Werewolves, sensing the retreat, leapt after them, crashing into the Howlers mid-air, tearing into them with claws and fangs.
Another werewolf lunged toward a descending member, but Frank was ready. A feather glinted through the air, piercing the side of the beast’s mouth. He followed up with a powerful slash of his clawed leg, crashing into the creature and sending it sprawling.
“Everyone, MOVE!” Frank shouted, his voice echoing through the trees.
He, Sadie, and Elijah were doing everything they could to hold the enemy back. They were Altered, strong, fast, and trained, but there were only three of them.
Three against an endless tide of monsters.
They couldn’t stop them all.
One werewolf, halfway up a tree, launched itself toward a Howler who had just leapt from a branch. The creature hurtled straight toward its target, until a stream of water blasted in from the side, crashing into its ribs and sending it spiraling into the dirt.
It wasn’t just one stream.
More and more jets of water began shooting through the battlefield, striking legs, claws, and limbs mid-swing. The strikes weren’t random. They were precise. Protective.
They could only be coming from one person.
Sadie turned and spotted Kanu. He was still fighting off the Ironfang, blocking a downward strike, yet his mouth remained open, water surging from it even as he took blow after blow.
Then, a savage kick to his stomach.
Kanu staggered, but he didn’t fall.
Instead, he continued spitting water at the other werewolves, choosing to protect his allies rather than defend himself.
The streams of water were changing.
The pink tint was deepening.
‘Kanu… what are you doing?’ Sadie thought, heart clenching. ‘Your water… it’s red now. Are you bleeding that much? Internally? Even for someone like you… this is too much.’
But she couldn’t focus only on him. She knew if she stopped, even for a second, then Kanu would have to carry even more weight, and he was already giving everything.
Still, the White Rose members couldn’t help but notice it. The water coming from Kanu’s mouth was no longer blue. It wasn’t even pink.
Yet, it was working. A large chunk of the Howlers had successfully made it out of the forest. They had formed a narrow line as they escaped, covering each other, trying to keep the group moving and protected.
But just as another wave of werewolves surged forward, a battered figure came crashing down from above.
He landed in front of the three remaining White Rose members, Frank, Sadie, and Elijah.
His body was cracked, his hardened shell split and bleeding in places. The fight against the Ironfang had taken everything out of him. Still, he stood.
“It looks like… I’ll know what retirement really feels like today,” Kanu said, forcing a smile through bloody lips. “All of you… you’re great people. And I’m glad I got the chance to meet you in this life.”
“Elijah, pass on a message to Xin for me. Tell her… she found a great man. Her brother’s proud of him. I’m proud of him. That’s why I’m willing to do this.”
There was no more time for words.
Water erupted from Kanu’s mouth in a violent stream, smashing into the oncoming werewolves and throwing them back.
He turned, adjusting slightly, blasting the Ironfang himself. Like before, the strike hit, but the water was crimson, not clear.
And still, he pushed forward.
Sadie, Frank, and Elijah could hardly speak. The lump in their throats made it impossible. But they didn’t argue.
They didn’t waste his sacrifice.
They turned and ran, shouting the only thing that mattered:
They said it in perfect sync, voices trembling.
Because Kanu wasn’t just a leader.
He was one of the greatest men they had ever known.
Kanu stood his ground, his legs shaking, his body failing, but the water never stopped.
It kept pouring from his mouth, a wall of crimson holding back a wave of death.
Until finally… the water stopped flowing.
His heart stopped too.
