Chapter 1423: The Weight of a Warhammer
There was one specific area in the park that had been set up as the central battleground between the Howlers and the Lupus group. That strategic location was none other than the hilltop where Gary had been stationed, positioned beside a large, two-floor, oval-shaped restaurant that overlooked the entire zone.
This wasn’t just a symbolic placement. If any group within the Howlers found themselves overwhelmed, scattered, or needing assistance, their orders were clear, they were to retreat to this hill, where Gary and a few others would be waiting. It served as a base, a rallying point, and a symbol of strength.
However, there was one major factor the Howlers couldn’t predict no matter how hard they tried: where the members of the Lupus group would actually appear.
Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, depending on how each situation turned out, it was impossible to predict the form every encounter would take. And as for Gary’s current situation, things had escalated. One of the Ironfang members had arrived. His name was Slit.
He wasn’t just another grunt. Slit had long since earned his spot among the Ironfangs due to his sheer skill and power. But now, he was more than that. He was armed with one of the Dark Guild’s most powerful gifted weapons, twin daggers enhanced by unknown, deadly magic.
Using these daggers, Slit had disrupted everything around him. He had interfered in the Howlers’ operation so effectively that Izzy, Ian, and Numba weren’t able to do a thing. They were forced into a defensive stance, unable to counter.
Not wasting any more time, Gary had seen enough. He couldn’t contain himself any longer and had gotten involved in the battle personally. His target was clear: Slit.
Leaping high into the air, Gary shot toward Slit like a missile, ready to land a devastating blow. The Ironfang member hadn’t even noticed what was coming his way. As Gary lifted both of his hands mid-air, it looked like he was gripping something invisible.
And then, it appeared.
Out of nowhere, forming in his grasp, was the Lycantide Warhammer, a legendary Demon-tier weapon.
To Slit’s eyes, the weapon had materialized from thin air. He had no time to question it. Acting purely on instinct, he pulled both of his daggers from his sides and raised them above his head. He drew out as much power as he could, his blades glowing violently, energy surging through them.
But the question was, would it be enough?
Because Slit had no idea what kind of strength Gary was truly wielding, nor did he understand the level of the weapon now in his hands.
Gary, with momentum behind him and the hammer now fully in his grasp, poured Qi into both of his arms. That Qi flooded into the warhammer, and something happened, the weapon responded. The energy from the hammer bounced back into Gary, strengthening him further.
The massive hammer slammed down directly on top of the daggers.
The result was catastrophic.
Slit’s legs gave way beneath him, his knees crashing into the hard ground. The force of the impact cracked the earth beneath his feet, sending deep fissures racing outward in every direction. The sheer intensity of the strike vibrated through Slit’s entire body, and although the warhammer hadn’t even made direct contact with him, the sheer pressure caused blood to erupt from his mouth.
Almost the entire area around them trembled.
Inside the nearby restaurant, chandeliers quivered, glasses clinked, and everyone turned toward the window, stunned. Their heads turned instinctively toward the origin of the explosion-like impact.
And there stood Gary.
He had already placed the warhammer back over his shoulder and was staring at the destruction he’d caused. A wide crater had formed beneath him, and long cracks spidered out from where the hammer had hit.
‘That was my power?’ Gary thought to himself, shocked. ‘Even without using my full transformation… That strike, was it already at the level of a transformed hit?’
He couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if he did fully transform while using the warhammer. What kind of damage would he be capable of then?
But there was no time to think about that.
Because although there was blood in the crater he had created… there was no body.
‘He’s an Ironfang… and with weapons of his own, I didn’t expect him to go down in one hit. He’s probably using one of the daggers’ abilities to hide himself right now,’ Gary deduced.
However, it was useless.
As long as Gary held the warhammer, it continued to glow faintly. And now, off to the side, a small blue marking appeared, visible only to him.
‘This… this is one of the warhammer’s skills, right?’
[Those directly hit by the warhammer will receive a blue wolf-shaped mark on their body. Strikes aimed at the mark will deal critical damage. Once the mark is struck again, or another part of the body is hit, the mark will disappear.]
[If the mark is hit again by the warhammer, the damage will double. There is no limit to the number of marks that can be applied.]
Gary’s eyes narrowed.
The mark was glowing directly on top of Slit’s head.
Apparently, when the warhammer had landed, a small portion had touched his scalp, just enough to activate the ability.
But Slit had no idea.
He was struggling to move, using the dagger’s power to conceal himself, thinking he was safe for the moment.
‘None of this is making any sense,’ Slit thought, still trying to gather his strength. ‘They said he couldn’t transform, that he’d be weak. Sure, I expected him to be strong, but this strong? My entire body’s still in pain… I think that hit did internal damage all throughout.’
Now Slit faced a critical decision.
Originally, he was supposed to retreat the moment he spotted Gary. He was meant to inform Ylva or Lupus of his location. But he had been overconfident. He thought he could handle it on his own.
And now, he was paying the price.
But before Slit could even complete the thought, Gary appeared beside him, again, without warning. Slit was still using his dagger’s ability. He truly thought he was hidden.
But to Gary, he might as well have been standing out in the open.
This time, there was nothing in Gary’s hands at first.
Mid-swing, the hammer materialized once again, its heavy form slamming into Slit’s ribs with brutal force. The impact cracked multiple bones instantly. The sound of it echoed like a cannon blast.
‘With this warhammer… I’ll crush anyone who dares to threaten the Howlers!’ Gary thought, his eyes locked onto the fallen Ironfang.
