Chapter 1410: The Perfect Team
Xin and the others stood frozen, unable to process the weight of what they had just heard. Ghost’s words echoed in their minds, and the silence that followed was heavy with uncertainty.
Was he telling the truth? And if so, why? Did Ghost even have a reason to lie at this point?
“This… this is exactly what I was worried about,” Midwak finally muttered, tension creeping into his voice. “Sitting back might have seemed like the safest move. But if all those Werewolves have actually been equipped with high-level beast gear…”
He paused, gritting his teeth.
“They’ll sweep through the Howlers like wildfire.”
A few of the members gulped. Even if the Howlers had been operating at full strength, what Ghost described would’ve been nearly impossible to face. The odds were terrifying.
Then, suddenly, BANG!
A loud crack rang out, punctuated by a voice that commanded immediate attention.
“We only have one choice left!”
The group turned to see Olivia, standing confidently with her whip already drawn, the weapon crackling with tension.
“I say we take him out first,” she continued, eyes locked on Ghost. “Then we help the others. I’ve been fighting without relying on my Werewolf form for a long time. I can handle a few like him.”
Without waiting for a reply, Olivia flicked her wrist. The whip lashed out, wrapping tightly around a nearby metallic bin. With a sharp tug, she tore the container from its bolts and hurled it straight toward Ghost.
But Ghost was faster.
He shifted to the side, evading the projectile effortlessly as it slammed into the ground with a metallic crash that shook the street.
Olivia’s weapon wasn’t just a whip, it was a beast weapon. Combined with her Werewolf strength, she could wield it like a wrecking ball.
But Ghost wasn’t your average Werewolf.
He darted left, then right, his movements fluid and unpredictable. In a flash, he launched into the air, his arm mid-transformation. When he swung down, a massive claw, shimmering with deadly energy, tore through the air toward them.
“MOVE!” someone shouted.
The entire group scattered. The claw strike crashed into the pavement, leaving a deep, jagged scar in the concrete. Just a moment slower, and any of them could have been split in two.
“Is everyone okay?” Xin called out, scanning the street.
But her eyes widened.
Ghost was no longer in the air, he was right in front of Midwak.
“Let’s deal with the traitor first!” Ghost snarled.
With a quick step, he raised his leg and delivered a devastating side kick.
Midwak braced himself, arms up in defense, but it barely made a difference. The sheer power of the strike sent him flying. His body crashed through the window of a nearby music store with a loud smash, glass shards scattering in all directions.
Even with their full transformations, none of them might have stood a chance.
“Even if all of you transformed,” Ghost said coldly, turning back to the others, “I’d still bet on myself to win this fight.”
Meanwhile, chaos had already erupted in the massive park the Howlers had chosen as their battleground. Across the grounds, dozens of fights unfolded at once.
Deep within one of the densely wooded areas, a particular group was faring better than expected.
They were known as the White Rose Group, consisting of Elijah, Kanu, Sadie, and Frank.
They had retreated into the forest, but thanks to a combination of strategies, they held their ground. Some of the Howlers attacked from the forest floor, while others struck from the treetops, creating a layered offensive that surprised even them with its effectiveness.
Scattered throughout the woods were remnants of old playground equipment, seesaws, climbing frames, and other fixtures rusted by time. Yet they made for excellent cover and terrain advantages.
Elijah had climbed onto a high metal frame, using his surroundings to his advantage. But as he looked around, he noticed something unsettling.
“Man, are these things even Werewolves? Or are they monkeys in disguise?” he muttered. “They’re climbing like pros!”
Suddenly, one of the beasts lunged at him, forcing Elijah to slip back under a lower bar. With a grunt, he grabbed one of the metal frames and bent it down just as the creature’s jaws snapped at him.
The Werewolf bit down, but its mouth caught on the bar, metal digging into its gums, stopping it from reaching Elijah’s throat.
Without wasting a second, Elijah’s arm transformed, stone replacing flesh. He brought it crashing down on the Werewolf’s skull.
The beast wasn’t going down easily, and Elijah poured all his strength into each blow. He was so focused, he didn’t notice the other Werewolf leaping at him from behind.
But from the treetops, whizz!, a volley of arrows shot down, piercing the second Werewolf’s back.
The creature screeched in pain, its cry snapping Elijah to attention. He swung blindly behind him, his stone fist connecting squarely with the beast’s jaw, sending it crashing to the ground.
He leapt down from the frame and landed back on solid earth, just in time to see Kanu fighting off five Werewolves at once.
Kanu’s hardened, shell-like skin kept him protected. Despite the Werewolves’ strength, they struggled to land any real damage through his thick armor. Their claws scraped and skidded, but didn’t pierce.
Even they had begun to realize that taking down Altered fighters like Kanu or Elijah wasn’t worth the effort.
So they changed targets.
Now, they began turning on the Howler members.
One rushed a Howler directly, its claws ready to rip him apart, until Sadie dove in, snatching the Howler and throwing herself upward. With a powerful flap of her wings, she soared to a thick branch, avoiding the deadly strike.
Now airborne, Sadie rained down a volley of iron-feathered projectiles, her Altered ability slicing through the air and embedding into the enemy.
“Thanks,” the Howler muttered, catching his breath.
“It’s nothing,” Sadie replied. “We’re only able to fight because we’ve got each other’s backs.”
Kanu was realizing it too. Their squad, two ground-based powerhouses and two aerial fighters, was more balanced than he had thought. With the Howlers supporting them, they were holding their own.
But in the middle of the chaos, Kanu suddenly felt something shift.
The air changed, just slightly, but enough to make the hairs on his arms rise.
Looking ahead, he spotted it.
A Werewolf, breathing heavier than the others. And in the direction it came from…
A new figure was emerging.
One wearing a dark, iron mask over its snout.
