Chapter 1408: The Warning
This time, the people of Slough had been warned.
There was no hiding the fact that a battle was about to take place. An entire area of the city had been cleared out, with officials urging residents to evacuate temporarily. And while the reason was never officially announced, everyone could feel it, something dangerous was coming.
Still, the city couldn’t simply come to a halt.
Life had to go on. Accidents would happen. People would still need ambulances. Babies would still be born in hospitals. Emergencies, as always, didn’t pause for anyone, not even an Altered-level battle.
But that didn’t mean things continued as usual. No, Slough had shifted into survival mode. The streets were quieter than ever. Most residents had chosen to remain indoors, curtains drawn, lights dimmed, praying that whatever was about to unfold wouldn’t reach their doorstep.
And then there were the police.
They knew something was happening too. But what could they do? With no anti-Altered gear, no high-level weapons, they were all but useless against a true threat. Their job had been reduced to managing panicked citizens and containing minor disputes.
That was why, as Ghost walked calmly down the center of a main street, not a single vehicle passed by. Cars sat abandoned along the curbs, and the sidewalks were eerily empty.
No horns. No chatter. No footsteps. Just silence.
Ghost walked with purpose, his gaze sweeping across the buildings on either side.
‘If I cause enough destruction,’ he thought, ‘they’ll come out. They always do. And if no one shows themselves… well, I’ll just have to force them out.’
He searched for something, anything large enough to throw. A car. A metal post. A concrete bench. With his strength, he could easily launch a car straight through a building wall if he wanted.
Just as he approached a parked vehicle, he noticed a figure crouched by the driver’s side window. A man with tools in hand, clearly trying to break in.
Ghost tilted his head slightly, intrigued.
“You know,” Ghost said, his tone casual yet cold, “I’m not particularly fond of killing humans.”
He took a step closer, the pavement cracking beneath his feet.
“But back in Ruin City, I was the one tasked with eliminating all those who opposed Lupus’s plans, those who refused to accept the world we were trying to build. And if there’s one thing I never mind doing… it’s getting rid of a thief.”
The man spun around, panic in his eyes, and pulled out a short knife.
He didn’t get to use it.
In an instant, Ghost had grabbed his head with one large hand and hoisted him upward. In a single, brutal motion, he slammed the man down on top of the car’s hood, crumpling it like foil. The car alarm began to blare, loud, shrill, and unmistakable.
It was exactly the noise Ghost had wanted.
Residents from nearby apartment blocks peeked through their windows. Some quickly shut their curtains, while others ducked beneath them, pretending they hadn’t seen a thing.
Phones lit up. Calls were made. Reports poured in to the local police lines, people begging for help, hoping that maybe, just maybe, the Howlers would arrive to stop whatever was happening.
“I suppose that still won’t be enough to draw them out, will it?” Ghost muttered.
He grabbed the now-unconscious man and casually flung his limp body across the street. It smashed into the front window of a small shop, shattering the glass and crumbling the frame.
Ghost cracked his knuckles and turned back toward the car. Without effort, he lifted it into the air with both hands. The sight alone would’ve been enough to confirm it, this was the enemy. And he wasn’t just dangerous… he was clearly an Altered.
With a grunt, Ghost hurled the vehicle toward the upper floors of a nearby apartment block. It soared through the air and crashed into the building’s side with a thunderous impact. Flames burst from the wreckage. Screams followed. The structure shook violently.
Panic spread like wildfire.
Residents began pouring out of the building. Some rushed down stairwells; others climbed into cars or sprinted into the streets barefoot, desperate to escape the chaos. But where could they even go?
“I need to finish this quickly,” Ghost said, cracking his neck. “Otherwise, Ylva will be nagging in my ear for hours.”
With a single leap, he soared into the air and landed inside the burning structure, right in the middle of the panic.
A man, a civilian, tried to escape through the hallway. Ghost grabbed him by the head, his claws digging into the scalp.
He dragged the man toward the gaping hole he’d created earlier with the car.
“You see this?” Ghost growled. “This… this is the result of certain Howler members choosing to hide!”
Without warning, Ghost slashed the man across the chest, his claws leaving deep, bleeding gouges. The man cried out, struggling weakly, before being lifted by his head again.
“I don’t want to hurt the public,” Ghost shouted, addressing anyone who might be watching. “But I will. Unless the Howlers stop hiding and face me, this is what’s going to happen.”
With that, he hurled the bleeding man from the fourth-story window. The body struck the ground below with a wet, sickening splatter.
Gasps echoed through the street.
And now… the screams had multiplied.
The roads were no longer empty. People flooded into view, some running away, others frozen in fear, unsure of where to go. Some leaped into their cars. Others simply dropped to the ground, trying to shield their heads and hope it would all go away.
Ghost stood tall at the edge of the broken apartment, his chest rising with excitement.
“To be recognized… to truly be seen in this world… we werewolves had to shed blood,” Ghost declared. His eyes flared with rage, his voice booming with centuries of pain.
“For generations, we lived in shadows. While humans bred freely, built cities, and lived their peaceful lives… we suffered. Forgotten. Hunted. Erased.”
His arm began to transform, the skin tearing away, replaced with blackened fur and jagged claws.
“So don’t expect me to feel anything for you. Because you never felt anything for us!”
He was ready to strike again, ready to unleash another wave of carnage.
“STOP!” a voice cried out, strong and clear.
Down the street, a group stood at the edge of the chaos, panting and catching their breath. Dressed in black and gold, their uniforms shone beneath the hazy sky.
Xin stepped forward, her fists clenched.
“This is what you wanted, right?” she shouted. “Well, we’re here. So stop hurting the public, and fight us!”
