I heard several notifications go off to the side of my vision, but I had more important matters to attend to.
The cries, screams, and laughs—a cacophony of sounds and emotions—filled the usually silent Kamar-Taj. The kids who had, until that point, held their feelings to prevent problems were now free to express themselves, cry without risking death, laugh because they were free, and scream their hearts out.
" You have done a good job." The Ancient One said while placing his hand on my shoulder, the pure calmness that brought his touch made me look at him in wonder. How old does someone have to be to reach such a state?
" You think? If I had been faster on my studies, you might have given me the mission earlier and she..." I didn't end my phrase, my eyes locked on the little girl with missing limbs who was still looking like a lifeless doll, her body lying on a chair while several sorcerers tended to her injuries.
" You shouldn't live your life on the 'what ifs'; otherwise, you will never appreciate your achievements. You saved more lives than you would have saved if you did nothing. Sometimes it's not about the results, it's about the actions themselves."
I didn't answer him, my mind replaying his words to calm myself down. At the same time, I continued looking at the little girl's injuries, the bruises, the cuts, the scratches were all gone, some life slowly returning to her eyes, but none of her limbs grew back; only stumps took the place of infected injuries.
After they had done what they could they moved to the less injured patients, leaving the girl to herself, my heart ached, I felt powerless, I couldn't even protect a little girl when I looked at her eyes I saw myself, I saw myself, I see my face in the mirror right after the death of the matron, I see my arm bleeding out. In contrast, paramedics did their best to help me.
The scars left by that incident burned because of the memory, my emotions trying to start a fire again, but it was killed by my powers and the sense of calmness that the Ancient One oozed from his touch.
I walked to the little girl, stopping myself from touching her, scared that she might still be traumatized from her being raped, so I simply kneeled in front of her and looked into her eyes.
" No matter what I have to do, no matter how much I will have to bleed, sweat, or kill, I will help you grow your limbs back, and I will help you control your emotions, what happened is something you will most likely never forget, but I will be there for you, in the lows and the highs, I will be there, no matter what."
For a minute, the girl remained silent, her face still lifeless, but then signs started appearing, her body began trembling, tears formed in her eyes, and sounds began coming out of her little mouth.
She cried, her stumps moving towards my body, trying to hug me, which I immediately did, protecting her little body from anything that might hurt her.
She cried and cried, sobbing and using all of the little force she could muster to attach herself to my body, her tears and snot falling on my clothes, but I ignored it and instead continued hugging her.
Something I didn't expect was for the other kids to add themselves to the hug, hugging my legs or each other to express their thanks to me.
By the end, the kids had left my legs covered in tears and snot, while the little girl fell asleep in my arms, her face a bit more relaxed than it was before, this most likely being her first good sleep in a long time.
" Healing magic is much harder than anything you have ever done until this point. Destroying is far easier than creating. I could do it if you wish." The Ancient One said after the commotion had calmed down.
" No, this is something I have to do, no matter what I have to do, I will heal her."
" Then I will help by giving you the best teaching I can." He said while smiling.
We spent the rest of the day sending the kids back to their homes, which made us discover that the little girl was an orphan, which made me want to help the girl even more.
By the time the sun had fallen, I had placed the little girl on a bed we had set up next to mine, finally giving me a chance to look at the notification I had until this moment not read.
