Mercenary’s War Chapter 136

136: Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Five: Captives 136: Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Five: Captives The underground passage was neither dark nor damp, and there was no feeling of stuffiness. Li Jinfang and Gao Yang, one on the left and one on the right, walked at the forefront, moving stealthily and taking care not to make any noise. After advancing about a hundred meters, they reached the first corner in the passage. At the corner, Li Jinfang listened intently before quickly making a fist to signal a stop advancing. He then used hand signals to swiftly inform those behind him that danger was ahead and to prepare for combat. Gao Yang was right behind Li Jinfang. Gao Yang slowly took off his equipment and laid it gently on the ground, and Li Jinfang also unloaded items that could impede his movement. Once ready for the assault, Gao Yang suddenly peeked out to take a quick look. After the passage took a turn, not far ahead was a large space resembling an underground parking lot. All the passages ultimately converged into this vast area. In that underground hall, a cross-country vehicle was parked with an officer beside it, directing more than a dozen soldiers who were bustling about. The soldiers were all carrying guns on their backs, but none holding them in their hands. They were busy stacking boxes next to a concrete pillar that seemed to serve as a scale. Although it was unclear what the boxes contained, Gao Yang could guess that they were definitely explosives. Gao Yang didn’t want to wait any longer, as the opposition could enter the passageway at any time. He whispered, “There’s explosives. Try not to shoot if possible, your belt is loaded with tracer rounds. Wait for us to clear the shooting line before you move up. Try to keep the officer alive. We need to try to get information about Abdul. After speaking, Gao Yang darted around the corner, sprinting forward at maximum speed while firing his shotgun. Gao Yang’s shotgun held eight rounds, and it was semi-automatic, allowing him to fire in quick succession. This enabled him to unleash maximum firepower at a range of roughly thirty meters. The muffled blasts of the shotgun alternated with the crisp reports of Li Jinfang’s M4. With each shot, another person fell. By the time Gao Yang had emptied his eight rounds, he had already reached the side of the cross-country vehicle, while only three of the armed soldiers were left. They had managed to drop their boxes and turn their guns toward Gao Yang. Before they could cycle their bolts, Li Jinfang had already killed the remaining three soldiers. Gao Yang charged straight at the officer, who looked utterly astonished. As the officer’s trembling hands had just drawn his sidearm, Gao Yang was already upon him. Gao Yang didn’t give the officer a chance to fire. With his empty shotgun, he swung hard at the officer’s gun hand, knocking the gun to the ground. He then retracted the shotgun and smashed its butt into the officer’s face. The ambush by Gao Yang and Li Jinfang was incredibly successful, taking only about ten seconds in total. All sixteen soldiers were already down. Li Jinfang quickly reloaded a magazine and shot any soldiers still moving. In the meantime, Gao Yang had stepped on the officer, thrown his shotgun aside, and drew his pistol, aiming at the officer. Glolov and the others had just rushed out when the ambush was nearly over. Then Cui Bo and Frey simply turned around and ran back to retrieve the equipment Gao Yang and Li Jinfang had left at the corner. Gao Yang aimed his pistol at the blood-covered officer and urgently asked in English, “Do you speak English?” Watching the officer’s bewildered face, Gao Yang immediately shouted, “Rabbit, come and ask him, Toad, check out the terrain, get the SUV ready, we’re leaving immediately!” The underground hall Gao Yang and his team were in was at least two thousand square meters with three very spacious routes that even trucks could pass through, two of which likely led to the inner areas of Aziziya Barracks, and judging by the direction the SUV was facing, the third and widest route was probably the one leading outside. The SUV was a Land Rover Range Rover with its doors wide open. After Li Jinfang climbed into the vehicle, he immediately started the engine, while Cui Bo and Frey opened the rear doors and tossed Gao Yang and Jinfang’s stuff in. Glolov and Frey kept watch with their guns drawn as Cui Bo crouched in front of the officer, rattling off in Arabic. “Ask him if he knows Abdul, and where we should run to.” After Cui Bo spoke in Arabic, the officer became frantic yet stubborn, only shouting angrily, then Cui Bo, with a furious expression, urgently said, “He refuses to say anything.” Glolov thought for a moment and said in a deep voice, “Put him in the car, I can slowly question him there.” Gao Yang had no better solution and promptly ordered, “Get him in the car, squeeze in for a bit, we’ll ask on the way.” Glolov and Cui Bo squeezed the officer into the back seat, with Frey also getting in, while Gao sat in the passenger’s seat. Thankfully, the Range Rover was quite spacious, so even with four people in the back, it wasn’t too cramped. Once everyone was in the car, Li Jinfang immediately drove through the widest exit. Although they still had to interrogate the officer about Abdul’s whereabouts, Gao and his team had finally escaped to safety. As Li Jinfang sped out, everyone in the vehicle, except the officer, let out a cheer. Gao now believed that even if the opposition entered the underground tunnels at this point, they surely couldn’t catch up to them. Although they still had to try locating Abdul, at least for the moment they were safe on that front. In good spirits, Gao looked much more favorably at the captured officer and, with a pleasant tone, said, “Rabbit, ask him where the underground tunnels lead to and about Abdul’s whereabouts. Tell him that as long as he talks, we will let him go. Cui Bo repeated the offer to the officer with a pleasant expression, but the officer, whose hands were taped behind his back, struggled vehemently. Without needing a translation from Cui Bo, Gao and his team knew the officer was cursing at them. Glolov shrugged his shoulders, pulled out his bayonet with an easygoing air, and said, “Rabbit, translate for me. If the others have nothing necessary to do, don’t look this way. What’s about to happen will be very bloody. Of course, if you don’t mind getting blood all over the car, that is.”
