Karen's POV
I walked out of the doctor's office as tears rolled down my cheeks freely. Mom ran towards me with a sympathetic look. "What did he say?" She asked and I felt my lips become sealed. I couldn't even say a word, Brody had kidney failure and he never told me. "Brody was diagnosed with kidney failure."
Her eyes widened and she looked at me shocked. I managed to sit down on the small couch in front of the operating theater. "Is that all the doctor said?" She asked.
I coughed and cleared my throat. "He also told me that Brody needed another kidney and if I was....."
She interrupted me with a frown. "You're not thinking of donating your kidney to him, are you?"
"Mom, I'll do anything for Brody."
"Brody is a stranger." She muttered.
I shook my head. "He is my husband."
"Your contracted husband." She reminded me.
Why was she talking like this? This was the time to encourage me and not discourage me. I definitely didn't need discouragement. "Mom, I already love him and you should know that. He's in this position because of me, please try to understand what I'm saying."
She frowned and avoided me, she faced the waiting room. "Karen," she suddenly called out. "There are risks in donating a kidney, you could die in the process and I don't want to lose you. It took me five years of marriage before I could give birth to you."
I frowned, I didn't understand why she couldn't realise my true love for Brody. "I know and believe me, nothing bad will happen to me. I'm sure the surgery would be successful and we will both come out as survivors."
She nodded and sat down. One of the nurses came out of the theater and took me to Brody's ward. As I walked in, I found him unconscious on the bed. I sat down on the bed and looked at him. He still looked handsome even in his condition. I smiled at his pink and kissable lips.
I took his hands and placed it in mine. "Brody, please wake up," I pleaded with a frustrated sigh as I began crying.
"He's in a coma." My mom said and I turned back and found her looking at me.
I nodded and stood up. My eyes went to Brody, he seemed pale and weak. I didn't even know what to do. "Is he going to make it?" I asked my mom holding his frail hands.
"Definitely, if he truly loves you."
"He's not going to make it if I don't donate my kidney to save him. I have to do this mom."
"Have you told the doctor about your decision?" She asked.
I turned to face her walking towards the door. "I'll tell him soon."
"You should think about it,"
I walked out of the ward with a frown, why was she saying that? "Brody is not in this condition because of you." She added and walked back into the ward.
Standing at the entrance, I saw a familiar face approach me. Bill looked at me with a smirk, "How are you doing?" He asked and I ignored his question. He was definitely not concerned even though he faked his expression. "I'm really sorry about what happened." He went on.
I nodded. "It's alright, you can leave now." I replied.
"Not so soon Karen, I need some...."
His voice trailed off and I frowned. "What do you need from me? I don't think we need each other so you should just leave."
"Give me some money."
I chuckled softly. "I don't owe you any money and you know I don't have money."
"You're a Billionaire's wife."
"Brody is not extravagant or irresponsible." I replied.
"I don't care what you'll do but I really need some money, my wife has reported me to the cops and they're looking for me."
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Why would she do that?"
He coughed. "It's none of your business."
"I can't help you." I replied
He winked at me. "What would the public think when they find out about the contract?" He asked.
Was he trying to threaten me?
"I don't really understand you."
"Well, you shouldn't because you and Brody should expect the worst." He replied and walked out of the hospital. My mom came out of the door and looked at me.
"What did he want?" She asked me.
"He's trying to blackmail me." I answered as we walked to the doctor's office. She knocked on the door and pushed it open, we both walked in and I stared at the doctor.
"Doctor, I'm sorry but can I know the risks involved in donating a kidney to another person. I don't want anything bad to happen to my daughter."
The doctor sighed and smiled at us. He adjusted his collars and removed his suit. He began. "Some donors have reported long-term problems with pain, nerve damage, hernia or intestinal obstruction. These risks seem to be rare, but there are currently no national statistics on the frequency of these problems. In addition, people with one kidney may be at a greater risk of high blood pressure."
My heart skipped a beat as he explained to us. I looked at her and we exchanged an uneasy glance. I was definitely scared. I didn't want to do anything that would make me die at a young age.
"How long can she live with one kidney?" My mom asked him.
He cleared his throat and answered her question with a high level of intelligence. "There might also be a chance of having high blood pressure later in life. However, the loss in kidney function is usually very mild, and life span is normal. Most people with one kidney live healthy, normal lives with few problems." He paused and looked at us. "In other words, one healthy kidney can work as well as two." He added.
I took a deep breath before making my final decision. "I'm willing to sacrifice a lot for Brody. I'll donate my kidney to save him." I said, avoiding my mother's gaze. I didn't know what would be going through her mind.
Two of the nurses were screaming the doctor's name as they ran into the office. "Doctor, we need your attention in Brody's ward." One of them said and my heart raced awkwardly.
