I usually wake up as if it's an emergency, as if sleeping had become a dangerous thing. My heart beat fast and there was a buzzing in my brain and together, they are as panic with jump-leads. I woke up suddenly, every thought in high definition. My eyes take in every ray of light and without a doubt I know that I have slept too long. The noises are of a day in full swing.
I relaxed back a bit as my mind went back to the previous night and the encounter with Mr. Deangelo as I wonder about what my fate will be.
Thrown out? Locked up?
I shut my eyes as I think back again to it all, most especially his stern and scary warning.
"Listen and listen carefully, I will not repeat this after this night. You have two options, you either be a good girl by following rules as you should in this home and I'll make sure you at least have a comfortable life in this pack or you keep on snooping around while ignoring what was assigned to you and I'll make sure you live a life that makes you think wherever you were kidnapped to or coming from is way better than this place. The choice is yours! Now get out. I don’t wanna see your face until I specifically ask to see it, got that?"
One that I was most certain of was that he wasn't joking about, he's the Alpha of Ferrari pack, if what I hear about him is true then I'm smart enough to know that this man does not bluff at all.
I’ve done a lot of stupid things in my life, but I think what I did last night really takes the cake. I put my head into my hands as my heart hammered in my chest. What kind of fool gets caught in her new boss’s bathroom, in her pyjamas, snooping around his room on her first day of work?
But what was I expecting, that I was going to be good at whatever this was that I was doing? I mean I'm on the run from my own pack while pretending to be a super nanny. Who was I kidding? I don’t even know the first damn thing about looking after children and minding my own business. I do not even know how to take proper care of my own self, I have been shielded all my life, locked up in rooms for months that I hardly even saw the sunlight or moon outside my room. I do not even know the first thing about making friends or having to make conversations with people.
I stared at the exquisite ceiling for a moment as I tried to think of a solution to the mess I had put myself into. I can't be given a second chance at life like this and have it blown out by my own recklessness and idiocy. If I just try to work as hard as I can so that I don’t get thrown out of this pack and into that harsh world where I'll easily be caught by Salvatore, I’ll be okay. As long as I'm able to spend up to a year under Mr. Deangelo's umbrella till my pack forget about me or even think I died, then I might finally decide to leave and forget ahead with my life in any way that I can. I really need to make this work for myself, I've come too far to ruin it all for myself now.
I felt my determination return. I needed to get dressed, go back to the main house and be the best nanny I could be so I can be a useful part of this new pack I've found myself in. I went into the bathroom and stared at my reflection in the mirror. Despite my determination, my face looked dejected and sad. I knew that it would take me some time to adjust to all of this but I swallow the lump in my throat. It will be okay. I will be fine. I just need to try really hard and it will all fall in place for me. Hopefully.
About an hour later, I walked down the stairs into the lounge where I found some of the people I had been introduced to the previous day, "uh... Good morning." I greeted shyly.
"Morning, Elena. I hope your night was beautiful, you're back already?" Camila greeted so cheerfully as she walked over to me.
I was confused at her question as I looked around them, Sofia, Mrs, Cari and Camila herself.
"Back? Back from where?" I asked.
"What do you mean back from where? Did you not drop the kids at school already? Isn't that where you're coming from?" Sofia spoke this time, with that undertone of meanness in her voice that I've managed to notice whenever she spoke.
My mouth dropped open as I stared at her, what one Arthur was she talking about? Drop them at school? The kids? Was I supposed to do that?
Sofia's face fell as she realized that I might not have done any of that, "Don't you dare tell me that the kids are still in this house?" She yelled.
"Uh... I... had no idea that I had to drop them at school or do anything like that, I'm so sorry. Maybe if I had been told about this yesterday... I..." I wasn't allowed to finish my gibberish before Sofia shoved past me, running to the kids' rooms.
"Wow... Elena, you really did not wake the kids up for school? Weren't you given the book of instructions yesterday? Sofia should have given that to you?" Camila asked me and I shook my head wondering what she was even talking about.
What book of instructions? I wasn't even told a damn thing.
Sofia rushed back down the stairs looking furious, "what do you mean, I didn't give you the book? I gave that to you just after you left Mia's room. And before I even gave it to you, I told you myself about waking up early enough to wake the kids and take them the school. I definitely told you that it was part of your duties as a nanny so what on earth do you mean by you had no idea?" She snapped and I stared at her, confused.
I mean, unless I suddenly developed amnesia or something, I'm sure I'll be able to remember if she ever told me or did any of those things she just mentioned but she didn't. Why is she making it look like I'm the one at fault when she didn't tell me what I should have known. Before I could even say anything to defend myself, she started to speak into her phone.
To Mr. Deangelo!
"Uhm... sir. The new nanny woke up very late and now the kids are late for school, I mean I've gone to wake them up to Bath but they're going to be late already sir... I do not know sir... yes... I definitely did that sir... I think the same way sir... okay sir..."
What the fuck?
I don't think I've ever been as confused as I was right now.
The silence that lingered in the air for minutes was deafening and soon the kids walked down the stairs from the second floor, all dressed in their uniforms. It was obvious that they both attended a private school.
"What are you waiting for, looking around like that? The key is on the table, the red BMW belongs to the kids, use that to take them to school, or do you need to be reminded about that as well. If you have read through the two page book yesterday, we would not be having these problems." Sofia snapped again.
I grabbed the key out of impulse and I began to walk outside, before Sofia spoke again, "the garage is that way!" She yelled, pointing in the opposite direction of where I was walking, I swerved immediately and then I stopped suddenly, as if remembering something.
"What is it again?" Sofia yelled, looking frustrated.
"Uh... uhm... I can't drive?" I said and the women in the room all facepalmed like it was rehearsed.
Sofia walked up to me and snatched the key from my hands leaving a little cut but that was the least of my worries right now.
"You're so dead when the Alpha returns. So dead!" She said before strutting out of the house.
Diego ran past me to follow her while Mia took her time, but she stopped at my spot before continuing, "I can't believe that I'm late to school for the first time in my life because of you. I've seen dumb nannies but you take the cake of being the dumbest." She said to me.
