King Chapter 1612

Chapter 1612: Chapter 72: Feigned Attack (Part 3) “Whizz, whizz, whizz…” The familiar sound of arrows in the air resounded, and a quick-reacting Centipede Soldier immediately fell to the ground. Seeing this scene, his companions chose to follow suit. Unfortunately, they were still a step too late, and their bodies were pierced by arrows. The sound of wailing constantly rang in his ears, and the Centipede Soldier lying on the ground didn’t dare to move a muscle. Fortunately, tonight was a feigned attack, and the charging Centipede Soldiers were very dispersed. Though the momentum seemed overwhelming, in reality, there weren’t many soldiers participating. Otherwise, just from trampling, it could cost him his Centipede life. Luck could not always accompany them. Soon, a companion was hit by an arrow and fell, directly crushing onto him. A scream escaped his mouth, causing not the slightest ripple. All around were the moaning wounded, adding one more meant nothing. But Kogtaluo quickly realized something was wrong. The Centipede on top of him turned over and even showed a smile on its face. Clearly, it wasn’t hit by an arrow; it was pretending to be dead. Glancing around, Kogtaluo was surprised to find that many Centipedes had made the same choice as him. It was clear that these guys were veterans with more experience in playing dead than he did. Compared to him simply falling to the ground, those guys had fake wounds, but none were hit in vital spots. “Kid, what are you looking at? You dare to pretend to be dead without any bloodstains on you! Don’t you value your life! You’re lucky to meet kind-hearted me. Later, roll around on the corpses a bit, get some bloodstains on you, and make some minor injuries before going back.” His companion’s words opened up a new world for Kogtaluo, making him realize that pretending to be dead was an art. His intuition told him that the companion was full of hostility towards him. If he wasn’t sure he could avoid discovery, he’d already be a dead Centipede. The warning was probably out of concern that an accident might implicate him. “Don’t worry, I’ve got experience!” Kogtaluo forced himself to speak calmly. But compared to his blood-covered companion, he, covered in dirt, was not convincing at all. Looking around, Kogtaluo was surprised to see that many bodies seemed to be stirring. They weren’t the only ones playing dead! However, no matter how many pretended to be dead, it wasn’t more than the actual dead. Just in a moment of hesitation, his companion’s blood splattered all over him. It seemed he didn’t need to pretend much to turn into a blood-soaked figure. Glancing back at the scar on his companion’s face, Kogtaluo gritted his teeth, having made up his mind. The thundering sound of the Magic Crystal Cannon echoed, and shells flew randomly through the night, hitting whatever by chance. The feigned attack plan was very successful, with the main force beginning to leave the city one after another, while the enemy still remained entrenched in the camp. Marshal Howell, sitting in command, showed no trace of joy on his face. The mission tonight seemed about to be completed smoothly, but from the enemy’s actions, he had determined they had fallen into a trap! No matter how much cover is provided, the commotion of the main force leaving the city couldn’t be entirely concealed. Just look at the enemy’s cannons, which intentionally or unintentionally aimed near the city. Once or twice was a coincidence, but repeatedly occurring coincidences were too much. Aware of the truth, he could do nothing now. The retreat operation had started, and it wasn’t something that could be halted at will. Moreover, this was merely a speculation. Even if stated, few among the tribe’s high ranks would believe it. If guessed wrong, the consequences would be dire and not something they could gamble with. Reason told him something would surely happen tonight. The feigned attack was proceeding too smoothly, abnormally so. If the enemy wasn’t deliberately letting them pass, they would’ve noticed the perfunctory attack long ago. In fact, Marshal Howell wanted to make the act more convincing, but the various tribes below weren’t fools. Just accepting such a miserable task already counted as being loyal to the species. Asking everyone to risk their lives, even he, the Marshal, couldn’t enforce that. “Six Wings, pass the order down. Have all units enhance their vigilance, as there might be tricks from the enemy. Subtly hint to them that we just need to hold out until dawn, then we can retreat from this place!” Marshal Howell ordered gravely. It was true that once day breaks, they could retreat, but they also had to hold until dawn actually arrived. As the Rear Army, their responsibility went beyond just a feigned attack. Should the enemy pursue, they also had to fend off the enemy, buying time for the main force’s departure. If the morale was high and soldiers willing to fight to the death, there might be a chance of executing such a task and withdrawing safely. Now, without needing to see, Howell knew the camp’s situation below was surely full of complaints.
