At noon, the Wizard Council received the report on the “Delayed Choice Quantum Double-Slit Experiment,” which made Harrov furrow his brows before shaking his head with a laugh.
“I think Jeffrey must be joking,” he said, “They actually claim in the experimental report that photons and electrons can predict the future, knowing in advance whether they will be observed, and when passing through the slits they make the choice to behave as either particles or probability waves, deciding whether to pass through a single slit or multiple slits…”
This was too much of a joke.
It was just as ridiculous as Lynn’s assumption of the constancy of the speed of light in the theory of relativity.
“I’m afraid he’s not joking…” Vittorio said with a grave expression as he spoke, “According to the information I have received, nine out of the fifteen great wizards involved in the experiment went mad on the spot!”
The smile immediately froze on Harrov’s face as he stared at Vittorio, taking a while to confirm that the man was not mocking him.
Even Aurora and Anthony, who had been examining the theory of relativity nearby, were shocked; although it was not uncommon for wizards to go mad lately due to their research into microscopic phenomena, nine at one time was excessively exaggerated.
“Have you replicated their delayed choice experiment?” Harrov said, still full of doubts and amazement, “Could it really be like it says, that photons and electrons can foresee whether an observation is going to occur, or even reverse causality?”
“Not replicated, but when I treated those wizards, I explored their memories. If these memories haven’t been modified in advance, then what the report says should be true, micro-particles might indeed possess some precognitive abilities,” Vittorio said, his brow deeply furrowed the entire time.
Because in those memories he saw dozens of modified versions of the double-slit interference experiment; Jeffrey and others had tried almost every conceivable method for validation, and the results were consistently astonishing.
Alade even came up with a particularly clever method of recording the entire experimental process and deciding afterward whether to observe or not, but the electrons and photons used for testing could still respond in advance and collapse into probability waves, which was nothing short of horrific.
Vittorio shook his head, then reported good news. “I’ve already erased the related memories from those nine, and now they are receiving mental treatment; there should be no life-threatening issues, they’ve just lost the capability to use light and thunder-based magic.”
“That’s a relief!” Aurora sighed in relief, the current council was after all made up of just over a hundred great wizards, and a loss of nine in one go was absolutely unacceptable.
Harrov was still pondering over the precognitive nature of photons and electrons when he was interrupted by a report from an attendant—wizards still in the royal city were gathered in front of Speaker Lynn’s mansion, arguing vociferously.
“We better go take a look!” Vittorio suggested, as if anyone could answer this question, it would probably only be Lynn, who proposed the theory of relativity.
Meanwhile, a large group of wizards was fiercely debating in front of a luxurious estate, discussing the four equations and two basic definitions of relativity as well as the credibility of the delayed choice experiment.
“I’ve said it again and again, according to the experiment, photons and electrons can accurately predict the future; they can sense it—I even suspect…” Jeffrey said, a look of fear on his face and with a trembling voice, “that they can read our thoughts and memories!”
Alade also said with a manic expression, “Indeed, photons and electrons exist everywhere; they must communicate with each other. Only this can explain how they always know our observation plans precisely.”
The wizards present had strange expressions—how could the claims be getting more and more preposterous? Was this not just a quantum ghost?
“Are you actually suggesting the existence of so-called quantum ghosts? And are you saying all microscopic elements are ghosts?” said Steg, a great wizard, to Jeffrey and others with a sneer. “I recall Speaker Lynn has already explained this matter; microscopic particles have no consciousness…”
“No one is more reluctant to believe this is true than I am, but we conceived more than a hundred thirty methods, all the experiments that our abilities allowed, we tried them one by one, and that is the truth!” Alade cursed furiously. “The Elemental Ghost, that bitch, can not only read our memories but also foretell the future!”
Sanchez also spoke up, recounting in detail the progress and results of every experiment they conducted.
The great wizards, originally there just for laughs, thinking the conclusion was utterly ridiculous, gradually changed from ridicule to solemnity and then to contemplation. Eventually, many of them entertained the idea of performing the experiment themselves to verify.
If Sanchez and the others were not lying, it would be too astonishing!
“Perhaps quantum ghosts do exist,” Sanchez said with a sigh. “Although Speaker Lynn is the Star of Magic, no one can be absolutely correct. You must not forget that Speaker Lynn’s earlier proposed star-pattern element model was proven wrong, even though it sounded very reasonable!”
