Chapter 538: Chapter 484 We Are But Playthings of the Gods, The Crumbling Faith of Ivina
The sudden voice startled Ivina, and the young girl quickly turned her head to look, where she saw a male wizard who looked to be in his twenties leaning against the wall next to the stone bed.
“The Star of Magic… Lynn?” Ivina naturally recognized him at first glance.
In the past several months, within the Wizard College of Fire Oil City, Ivina had heard many legendary tales about him, and in fact, investigating this Star of Magic was one of the tasks Gustav had assigned to her.
However, due to Lynn’s high standing within the Wizard Council, she and Monroe had no chance to approach him – one could say that it wasn’t until last night that they formally met this Star of Magic for the first time.
Ivina had a vague sense of familiarity towards the male wizard in front of her, perhaps because his hair color was somewhat similar to her brother Loth’s.
As the girl thought this, Lynn, on the other hand, nodded and then spoke up.
“That’s right, it’s me!”
“Speaking of which, I’m curious, both you and Monroe are undercover agents from the church in Fire Oil City, right? So why did you attack Saintess Cynthia of the church last night?” Lynn continued to inquire.
Although he had already gleaned some information from the girl’s mind, he still wanted to hear what she thought.
Ivina did not respond, but instead took a deep breath, her gaze intently fixed on Lynn as she countered with a question, “I want to know what a wizard is…”
“That’s a good question,” Lynn didn’t mind the girl’s deliberate change of topic, and instead answered with a smile, “The Council does not yet have a precise definition for a wizard, but if I had to attribute some characteristics to it, it would be a person who seeks to uncover the laws of the world’s operation and uses magic power to draw strength from it.”
“The laws of the world’s operation?” Ivina murmured to herself.
“For example, what is wind, what is water, why do apples fall to the ground, why can eagles soar in the sky, why do the sun and the moon move as they do? We understand, research, and summarize the laws of things, and use magic power to replicate them…” Lynn said each word deliberately, “That is what wizards are, that is what magic is!”
Ivina’s mind echoed every word Lynn said. In fact, after entering the Wizard College, she had asked several professors similar questions and had received many different answers – wizards were described as those with exceptional magical talents, capable of mastering magic…
Wizards are the elite chosen from thousands, the divinely gifted ones who use magic to transform the world.
Only Philip, who taught Elemental Studies, had said something similar to Lynn: wizards are those who seek the truth and derive their power from it.
“Then what about Divine Arts? What are Divine Arts?” Ivina pondered for a while before asking again.
“In some sense, Divine Arts are a rather special kind of magic!” Lynn responded lightly.
“Magic?” Ivina paused noticeably, then furrowed her brow, “But you just said that magic is the summarizing and application of the laws of the world’s operation. From what I understand, the bishops and priests of the Empire need only pray and study the holy texts every day…”
Like the kingdom, the Empire’s major cities also had their schools, but they didn’t need to study chemistry, physics, elements, or magic potions. Instead, the most basic literacy, arithmetic and most importantly prayer rituals and understanding of the Holy Scriptures were necessary…
“That is what makes it special!” Lynn smiled and without giving a long-winded explanation, stepped forward two paces. He placed his hand on Ivina’s head and whispered, “Don’t resist!”
The girl shrank her neck slightly, somewhat uncomfortable with Lynn’s somewhat intimate action, but still she forcibly calmed herself and sat motionless on the stone bed.
Having witnessed Lynn’s power, Ivina was very clear that if he intended to do something, she had no room to resist.
About two or three seconds later, a mild pain surged in her heart as if something had been poured into her brain.
In a daze, Lynn lifted his right hand from her head, and his gentle voice echoed within the confinement chamber.

Then, a flickering ball of lightning appeared in front of her, buzzing with crackling noises.
A look of astonishment immediately crossed Ivina’s face. She naturally knew of thunder magic, a very dangerous and powerful form of magic. Most importantly, she had never learned it, yet she was able to mobilize magic power to release it.
“For a legendary wizard, this is not a difficult feat. If you’ve read my magical thesis ‘Analysis and Research Report on Divine Energy,’ then you should understand that the nature of Divine Arts and magic power are not different at all!” Lynn said succinctly.
In this otherworld, magic power is the root of all that is extraordinary!
The Divine Arts the church often uses are just a form of energy application.
Of course, some spells are related to Spiritual Energy.
For example, the spell ‘Song of Courage’ that bishops often use to inspire troops can make thousands of people become immensely spirited and fanatical, even forgetting pain and fear, ready to fight with their lives on the line.
