I Am Your Natural Enemy Chapter 82

If Cai Qidong knew that, inside this chemical factory Domain, there was a zombie and a wraith accelerating the factory production, running the assembly line— And that somehow, they even managed to get enough corpses, endlessly supplied as raw material— I’m afraid Cai Qidong would even be tempted to put in an order for a timber transport truck. Wen Yan just walked along the observation corridor, from one end of the production workshop to the other, stopping here and there; after just a little over twenty minutes, he’d already watched the zombie workers deliver two batches of raw material. At this rate, the corpse supply could not possibly be coming from ordinary people in Divine Land. The delivery speed was just too fast; if they were murdering ordinary people, it would be absolutely impossible not to get caught. Wen Yan hadn’t spent more than a few days at the Funeral Home, but he’d done his homework before—even though plenty of people go missing every year, there was no way it could go entirely unnoticed, or be enough to keep this factory running. Passing through this workshop, he took the Walking Dead elevator from the other end up to the surface. The White-haired Zombie continued to lead the tour to the next workshop. The air here was thick with anguished wails and screams, and there was a special kind of power—something that seemed to grip the soul—a succession of visible ripples kept echoing across the workshop. Wen Yan only felt a bit of ringing in his ears, and a sensation just like the discomfort of having a ghost object pass through one’s body. Except here, there wasn’t that cold chill—just the discomfort, isolated from the chill. The White-haired Zombie took one look at Wen Yan’s expression and bowed even lower, moving even more cautiously. In fact, he hadn’t meant to bring Wen Yan’s group to this workshop, since this particular spot was unusual—it could affect souls. He could sense Wen Yan was alive, not only that, but someone with intensely strong Yang Energy. But Wen Yan had looked so absorbed watching the little zombie that he didn’t dare say anything more. Now seeing Wen Yan apparently unharmed, he felt even more grateful that he hadn’t rashly done anything from the start. Wen Yan looked around this workshop at all the rust-stained machines, with no idea what any of them were for. All he could see was a stream of wraiths being led in, lining up; as soon as they’d entered this workshop, it was as if they lost all awareness, standing there blankly as the conveyor belt ferried them inside. The conveyor sent the wraiths into a giant machine like an industrial mixer, inside a thick black water that swallowed the wraiths, sending them through pipes to the next station. Until at last, after going through a different machine—one with fire belching black smoke—the pipes led out again, destination unknown. The White-haired Zombie led Wen Yan’s group away from this workshop and was about to take him to inspect more areas, when Wen Yan caught sight of a team of hopping corpses in the distance. The hopping corpses sensed the Yang Energy on Wen Yan, and all turned to look, but when they saw the white safety helmet on his head, they immediately turned away, losing interest. Wen Yan’s gaze followed a massive pipeline arcing overhead; he found the thick conduit snaking out from the previous workshop and trailed it visually into the depths. The pipe stretched at least two hundred meters through the air, leading into a cluster of buildings, their high walls blocking all view of what lay inside. Wen Yan silently pulled up the map in his mind, quickly matching up the location. That area—corresponded exactly to the new construction outside the chemical plant, the area where Pei Tugou had been involved with the civil engineering project. According to the records, that zone was never part of the chemical factory site before; only last year did the factory apply for the land, finally approved at the start of this year. This Domain was modeled after the chemical factory, but it did not actually overlap with reality. So far, at least, all the layouts—especially the buildings—were mirrored exactly onto reality. Which meant, someone in the factory must know something. After the chemical plant was shut down and a bunch of people arrested, their foreman in the pink shirt was found hanged from a lamppost; the timeline was too neat, too tidy. Everyone in the Scorching Sun Department, to a man, had agreed it was a silencing hit—nobody doubted it for a second. Seeing how things were here, honestly, even if Wen Yan already knew it was "Pei Tugou" who did it, at this moment he still had to admit, the murder-for-silence theory was way too convincing. If he was the one behind all this, once someone got arrested and the factory was sealed up, he’d also want to make sure that pink-shirted foreman got silenced as soon as possible. The buildings inside those walls were obviously the most crucial part. Built outside first, as a blueprint, then projected into the Domain. Wen Yan stared that way and gave frantic eye signals to the little zombie. The little zombie, confused, just stood there dazed; but when Wen Yan shifted, making as if to start walking that way, she instantly picked up on it. She looked that way and muttered something in zombie-speak. The always-humble White-haired Zombie immediately shook his head, muttering something unintelligible, some ghostly tongue. The little zombie wasn’t too happy, and seemed eager to get Wen Yan to give the White-haired Zombie a couple of punches. But this time, the White-haired Zombie was resolute—he just kept shaking his head, even taking a step back. Wen Yan promptly shrugged, signaling the little zombie to stop. He turned to look at the White-haired Zombie. "It’s getting late, time to go. The young lady has slipped out secretly already—better get her back."
