Gilded Ashes: When Shadows Reign Chapter 98

The lab kept its own weather - warm at the benches, bright at the edges, quiet in the middle. The prototype lay open like a ribcage across two tables, cables draped in patient curves. A fan clicked and pushed the smell of metal and citrus through the room. Raizen tightened a clamp until the reading reached the number he wanted, then let it go by a hair because numbers liked to lie when you stared. Seven days behind the glass of the Spire schedule, and the first three had already tried to grow teeth. Kori had taught the city like a body. Not a wall - a machine that could hide inside itself. The boards moved like doors while she spoke: seven massive petals that could fold down and bury, then rise again when Neoshima needed to breathe. Four mouths at the compass points - commerce, supply, evac, return - and three other hidden doors that refused to be called doors, the kind that led into the Underworks if you were already in trouble. She walked them through redundancies like prayer beads. Power failed, backup spoke. Backup failed, secondary weights answered. Hydraulics died, gravity did the last work. Then the composite skin? Special alloys stacked until paper called them impenetrable. Yes, Kori made them learn every compound for reasons only she knew. They had watched the simulation close the city. The sound changed without a sound. Safety looked honest from that angle. Raizen felt it pull at him, then push back. No system deserved blind faith. People used the word impenetrable when they wanted permission to stop thinking. He kept his hand on the frame of the board until he could name that, then let go. Maps came next and did not stop. Roads were habits. Heights were numbers. The old turbine fields took turns pretending they were simple. Kori refused notes, then refused mercy, then refused repetition until repetition became the only way through. Esen built a fort out of failed paper and claimed eminent domain. Arashi invented three new arrowheads that helped no one but comforted him deeply. Hikari did not write - she looked, then looked again, and put the whole thing somewhere obvious in her mind. Lynea missed a boundary by half a finger and scowled like the map had lied to her. Keahi noticed a notch on a ridge no one had named yet and Kori circled it twice because it would take someone’s leg if they let it. By midday Raizen’s thoughts had the edge they only used to find in the ring. By night he lay down and saw lines instead of dreams. Esen put his forearm across his eyes and announced to the ceiling that he missed the Glowline - the grass, the nothing, the nap that was not a negotiation. Everyone knew exactly what he meant even if none of them said they wanted it, too. Weather arrived like another language over other maps. Wind off the ridge, wind from the deltas, the slow rivers of air that did not admit to being rivers. Pressure draped itself over topography the way mood drapes itself over a face. Kori poured sand into a tunnel and made invisible currents visible. The projectors drew ghost ribbons. Esen reached for one and caught nothing but his own laugh. Nyxes did not respect wind the way people did, Kori said, but they lived in it and so did you. Learn what your Eon does when the air is thin, when it is heavy, when heat sits and when it runs. Do not blame the sky for what you did not plan to meet. It hooked him in the way only problems with teeth ever hooked him. He made Day Two obey Day Three. If the ridge sent two hours of shade into a sector after noon, heat would pool by the barren lands and do nothing useful to anyone. Kori did not say gifted. She did not say anything. She just pointed once at the loop he drew between wind and route and said yes. Somewhere in the back of the room, Esen muttered that he used to dream of waves and now he dreamed of isobars. Arashi patted him like that counted as medicine. Back at the bench, the fan clicked again. Raizen shifted his grip and brought the arm bar angle in by two millimeters - Kori’s threat turned into obedience - then dropped the shoulder anchor one notch so the frame would stop throwing him where he wasn’t. Better. Not enough. Lighter would make it truer, but lighter had to live through force. Contradictions in steel meant you had to decide before you built. His thumb hovered over a line on the slate. Alloy ratios, brace geometry, intake vents no one would notice at a jog. The week had sharpened everything, including his appetite for solving the parts that would not sit still. He remembered the moment it had all gone quiet for reasons that had nothing to do with machines. The room had been dark except for the slate making a small ocean beside him. Notes on the sheet. Cable gauge calculations. Thrust without drag. He was writing his way from words into math and from math into noise when warmth found his back, then his shoulder. Hikari rolled and sleep did what waking would not have dared. Her arm slid across him, slow and light, and held. He froze in the way a hunted thing pretends to be a rock pretending to be a thought. Then her fingers curled and made the choice. A breath, then another. A word so small it could have been a memory. "Mother...", close enough to miss him and still hit. He glanced at the earring he had given her, catching the slate’s tired light where her hair let it work alone. He closed the slate. The numbers could spend a night without him. Back in the lab, the hesitation visited the same muscle and left faster. "Too tight" someone said. Saffi walked in without knocking because doors after dinner were optional. She wore the workshop like a scent. Grease along one cheek, hair pinned up with a clip that had definitely lost a fight earlier. She leaned over his shoulder to see the clamp he had just set, the kind of close that pretended not to notice itself. "I was testing stress limits" he said. "You’re testing my patience." It had the shape of a joke and the weight of a small truth. She bumped his hip to make room that did not exist and reached past him for a gauge. Shoulder to shoulder for a second, then not. She did not say sorry. If she had, it would have been disappointing. She adjusted his setting by a fraction and let the data redraw itself. The line dipped where he wanted a rise. He frowned. She smiled and hid it in the motion of putting the gauge down. "You look like you lost a fight with your thoughts again" she said, eyes on the feed. "They’re persistent." "So am I." She tapped the slate with a knuckle. "Move the anchor another bit. Your shoulder isn’t a hook." "Kori will call me a disaster and then make me do it anyway." ᴛʜɪs ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ɪs ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ʙʏ novel•fire.net "Kori calls you a disaster when you breathe." Saffi flipped through his drawings, didn’t ask permission, and found the one he hadn’t wanted to erase. "Also, I sent the cut request for the lighter brace." He blinked. "You what?" "Relax. Bold choices make pretty machines." She finally looked at him and held it one beat longer than friends usually do. "And ugly bruises if you’re wrong." He laughed because the alternative lived in a place without air. "That’s irreversible. And the structure isn’t perfect!" "Good. Irreversible means you stop thinking in circles. You hate circles unless you’re drawing them around trouble." The hinge sighed like it had been asking for days. The weight settled closer to a place his back could accept. He rolled his shoulder. The motion fed smooth through the bar into the brace instead of snagging on the cable. The graph climbed a little. Not victory. Enough to test. "Better?" he asked himself. "Price is stability" Saffi said. "You’ll feel it jitter if you pull too hard." Her wrist brushed his as she reached for the clamp again. She never moved in a hurry. "Stop thinking so loud" she said. "You drown the room." "You make it loud." She slid a new bracket across the table. "Try this. Then sleep four hours. No more. Your face looks like math and that scares the vending unit." Her steps collapsed into the hallway and became part of the building. The lab exhaled. He fitted the bracket, tightened, loosened, tightened again the way she had liked it. The graph gave him a clean line. Not perfect. True enough to earn the next mistake. Commitment sat in the metal now. He powered the frame. The arm bars lifted under his own quiet idea. Lighter. A little hungrier to move. Hungrier meant he would have to be gentler with the rest of him. He could live with gentler. He clicked the system down and let the hum fade. The city petals closed in his head and opened again. Wind crossed the ridge, then changed its mind. Somewhere above all of it, a city was building a stage and pretending it could see the ending. Progress came in different shapes. Some made noise when a wrench kissed steel. Some laid an arm across your shoulder in a room full of sleeping. Some filed a requisition before you got brave enough to decide. He set the tool aside and let the night be quiet on purpose. Four days to the Spire... Who knows how many to actual fighting?
