The amusement park was a kaleidoscope of color and sound as the evening deepened, the lights twinkling like stars against the dusky sky.
"Whaa—the lights are all sparkling now!" Aeri said, her voice bubbling with excitement as she clasped her hands together. Her eyes were wide, reflecting the glow of the neon signs and string lights draped over the food stalls and ride entrances. Her black mini skirt swayed as she bounced on her toes, her tight white t-shirt and open black shirt making her look effortlessly stunning.
"Yeah, I know, right?" I said, grinning as I followed her gaze. "The decorations are super aesthetic. They really went all out." The park felt alive, every corner bursting with color—reds, blues, and purples flashing from the rides, the giant Ferris wheel looming in the distance like a glowing beacon.
Aeri grabbed my hand, her fingers warm and eager. "Come on, let’s try that water roller coaster!" she said, pulling me toward the ride, her smile infectious. Her enthusiasm was like a spark, lighting me up as we weaved through the crowd, dodging kids with balloons and couples snapping selfies.
"Yes, yes, let’s go!" I said, laughing as I let her drag me along, her grip firm but playful. We joined the line for the water roller coaster, a winding queue filled with chattering families and other couples.
A small kid, perched on his mom’s shoulders, caught my eye, his tiny hands clutching a glowing light stick. He was giggling, his cheeks pink, as Aeri waved at him, her smile soft and warm.
"That’s a cute kid, right?" Aeri said, her voice gentle as she waved again, making the boy laugh and hide his face in his mom’s hair. She tilted her head, watching him with a dreamy look. "Someday, I’ll have one..." she said, her voice trailing off, like she was lost in a thought too big to share.
I looked at her, my heart doing a little flip. "We... surely will," I said softly, my gaze steady.
The words felt heavy, like a promise, and her eyes met mine, wide and searching. The breeze picked up, catching her hair and my longer strands, making them dance around our faces. Time seemed to slow, the noise of the park fading as we stood there, locked in each other’s gaze. Aeri’s cheeks flushed, and she pouted, a shy smile tugging at her lips, like she was caught off guard by the moment.
"Hey, you two! Come ahead, the ride’s about to start!" a gruff voice called, snapping us out of it. The ride operator, a middle-aged guy with a baseball cap, waved us forward, his clipboard in hand. I blinked, realizing we’d been so lost in each other we hadn’t noticed the line moving.
"Come on, they’re waiting for us," I said, grabbing Aeri’s hand again, my fingers lacing through hers. I tugged her gently toward the ride, my heart still racing from our shared moment.
Aeri didn’t say anything, just looked down at our joined hands, a soft smile spreading across her face. I could tell she was thinking back—back to when we were younger, when I was just a lanky school kid, holding her hand as she walked me home in her final days of college. As we drifted forward, a dazzling dolphin show erupted beside us—mechanical dolphins leaping from the water, their sleek bodies glistening under the spotlights, synchronized to a cheerful tune. Aeri squealed, her hands gripping my arm as a giant water shark surged up on the other side, its jaws snapping playfully, spraying us with a light mist.
"Ezra!" she yelped, clinging to me, her voice a mix of fear and laughter as she buried her face in my shoulder. Her hair tickled my cheek, and I couldn’t help but grin at how easily she got spooked.
"Hehe, you get scared so easily," I teased, patting her head gently, my fingers ruffling her soft hair. "It’s just a fake shark, you know."
Aeri pulled back, her lips forming a dramatic pout as she glared up at me, her cheeks puffed out in mock anger. "Ummm..." she huffed, crossing her arms, but the twinkle in her eyes gave her away. "You’d scream too if it came out of nowhere like that!"
"Sure, sure," I said, chuckling as I leaned back in the seat, the boat swaying with the water’s flow. "Keep telling yourself that, tough girl."
Neon-lit fish darted beneath the water, their colors flashing in sync with the music, and a tunnel of glowing stars shimmered overhead, making it feel like we were floating through a dream. Aeri’s excitement was contagious, her gasps and giggles filling the air as she pointed out every new surprise.
"Look at that one!" she said, her voice bright, nudging me as a water fountain shot up, shaped like a heart, catching the light in a rainbow spray.
"Pretty cool, huh?" I said, "They really know how to make a show."
The ride slowed as we entered a dark cave, the walls glistening with dampness, the sound of dripping water echoing around us. The boat rocked gently, the current pulling us deeper, and I could see the drop ahead—a steep waterfall plunge glowing faintly at the cave’s end. My stomach tightened, and I gripped the safety bar in front of us.
"Sighhh... brace yourself, Aeri," I said, my voice steady but laced with anticipation. "This is gonna be the big one."
Aeri didn’t respond, her usual chatter gone quiet. I glanced at her, expecting a playful retort, but she was staring straight ahead, her hands loosening on the bar. The boat inched closer to the drop, the roar of the water growing louder, and I felt her shift beside me.
"Ezra..." she said, her voice soft, almost lost in the sound of the ride.
I turned to her, and my breath caught. Her face was lit by the faint glow of the cave, her eyes glistening with a teary smile, her expression so vulnerable it stopped my heart.
"Please take good care of me, okay?" she said, her words trembling as she reached for my arm, her fingers curling around it.
She leaned in, resting her face against my chest, her warmth seeping into me. The boat teetered on the edge of the drop, but her words hit me like a tidal wave, drowning out everything else. They were heavy, full of trust and something deeper, and I didn’t have time to respond before we plummeted.
The boat slid down the waterfall at breakneck speed, water spraying around us, the wind whipping through our hair. Aeri clung to me, her face still pressed to my chest, and I wrapped an arm around her, holding her tight as we raced down.
