Mr. Johns almost fell to his knees when he heard Maeve's response. He stared at the young man who was now staring at him menacingly.
"How 'bout playing for a bit? I'm in a good mood lately." September sounded like he was trying to console the old man but Mr. Johns knew better. He was just prolonging his agony. The end would all still be the same.
He's ruined.
"Finish your food, Maeve." September reminded her while his eyes remained on Mr. Johns. Maeve snorted and finished the last spoonful of salad that he had put on her plate.
"Done." She said as she put her plate away. Her eyes then wandered on the almost untouched plate in front of her. She sighed and finally decided to end today's drama, she already had enough of it.
"Mr. Johns," she called out and she immediately caught the old man's attention. He would prefer having to deal with this little vixen than with the manipulator himself.
"I no longer have any connection with you. You are no longer part of the board, so please do leave my office peacefully." She said in a calm manner but Mr. Johns felt like that was the last straw of her patience. The courage he had earlier completely vanished as his rage turned into fear.
Falcon who was silently watching from the sidelines almost shook his head in pity for the old man. Mr. Johns would be the first casualty for this power couple.
"Mr. Johns?" Maeve called out once again, and this time her tone comes with a warning.
The old man was almost in tears as his eyes went back and forth between the two youngsters in front of him. Being suppressed with such young business people is one thing but having to drag his ass out of the building of the company he had been working for decades is another level of embarrassment.
Everyone outside the office was shocked to see a rather forfeited expression on the face of the old man. He came inside looking like a tiger whose out to take on his prey so it was no wonder why the employees were astonished to see him looking so defeated.
When Mr. Johns was gone from earshot, September turned around to face Maeve with a mocking smile.
"How dare you use me as a shield?" He asked playfully. Maeve smirked back at him before she gently pushed his plate in front of him.
"Your business is stable enough to face any comebacks from those businessmen. MBC's was just starting to recover." She said nonchalantly.
Falcon cleared his throat before excusing himself out of the office. He was thankful enough that he wasn't on the bad side of either of the two.
"Eat up." She said when she noticed that September didn't even touched the food. He whistled as a smile appeared on his face with that small gesture of her.
"Is that concern I'm hearing?" He teased which just earned a small smile from Maeve before she went back to work.
Maeve worked silently as September finished his food while enjoying the scene before him. She was trying to play it cool and refused to let her uneasiness with the way he stared at her.
She wasn't even aware when she started to let him hang around without a row of rebuttals. She just somehow realized that he was almost everywhere, every freaking day! She was now already accustomed to his presence and that was something alarming for her.
Meanwhile, as soon as Mr. Johns took his first step inside his office his phone had been bombarded with calls and he didn't even have to check what it is all about. He just knew that his life is over. All those years of hardship had gone to waste because of what? Because he offended the wrong people.
"Sir..." He looked up to see his secretary and immediately held out his hands.
"Come'n let's just get over this Chris." But far from what he had expected, which was a resignation letter, Chris clutched into his hands tightly.
"I would make them pay for this, Sir." The young lad said with a promising tone.
Mr. Johns shook his head in defeat as he affectionately tap Chris' head.
"Don't. It was September Thorne's doing. We have nothing to fight him with." The old man said before he let go of his secretary and looked around the building of the empire he had worked hard to attain. Now, all of these are just as good as burned ashes for him.
What is an Emperor without an empire to rule anyway?
But Chris' thoughts were different. He was adopted by Mr. Johns since he was young, the old man picked him up from the street, dressed him, fed him and sent him to school to learn. He grew up along with him and he saw how much work this old man allotted to build this company.
September Thorne? That was just a name. To him, that guy was a coward hiding behind the shadows of the people who worked under him. Taking all the glory while his people worked hard for it.
Who doesn't have a weakness? He's sure he could find one soon. For a well known person like him, how hard would it be to find one? If it happened that he can't get back at him, then, there would always be people around him.
People that mattered to him.
With pure rage and thirst for justice for his foster parent, Chris faced Mr. Johns with a determined face.
"I'll make him pay, Sir. I'll make sure of it." The old man gazed back at the young man with him but he didn't take his words to heart and so he just nodded and gently tapped his shoulder before he left the office.
Chris watched the old man left dejectedly and filled with grief. He waited for a few more moments to make sure that Mr. Johns had truly left the building before he pulled out his phone and dialled someone's number.
"I need your help with something."
