The moment he stepped through the Gate of Shadows, the world he had known collapsed. There was no sensation of falling, no feeling of movement—just an overwhelming emptiness, as if he had been erased from existence itself.
The weight of reality had lifted, leaving him floating in an infinite abyss where neither time nor space seemed to hold meaning.
Then came the whispers.
At first, they were distant, unintelligible murmurs that wove themselves through the void like strands of shadow.
But as the seconds—or were they hours?—dragged on, the voices sharpened, growing clearer, pressing against the walls of Kaito's mind.
"You do not deserve this power."
"You will never be enough."
Kaito clenched his teeth, his pulse pounding in his ears.
He had fought monsters, battled against forces that defied reality itself, but this... this was different. This battle was not against an enemy he could see or strike down with his sword.
This battle was against himself.
The abyss trembled, and suddenly, the shadows around him shifted. They began to mold, taking shape, forming something familiar. Kaito watched, frozen, as a figure stepped forward from the darkness—a mirror image of himself, but different.
This version of Kaito stood taller, his form wreathed in an aura of black mist, his eyes gleaming with an unnatural silver light. The dark doppelgänger smirked, tilting his head as if observing something pathetic.
"So," the shadow-Kaito said, his voice eerily similar yet filled with a cold mockery, "this is who I really am?"
Kaito narrowed his eyes, gripping the Shard of Eternity tighter. "What... are you?"
The doppelgänger chuckled, stepping forward, the darkness bending around him like a living entity. "I am you, Kaito Ren. The part of you that you've denied. The part that you've buried beneath false morality and empty promises."
Kaito remained silent, watching his counterpart carefully.
Shadow-Kaito spread his arms, his smirk widening. "You think you're some kind of hero, don't you? A warrior destined to save the realms. But deep down, you know the truth." His eyes gleamed with an unsettling amusement. "You don't want to protect anyone."
Kaito's fingers twitched. "That's a lie."
The doppelgänger laughed, a hollow, echoing sound that sent a shiver down Kaito's spine. "Is it?" He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Or are you just too afraid to admit what you really want?"
Kaito's breath hitched.
"You crave power, don't you?" Shadow-Kaito continued, stepping closer. "You don't fight to save people. You fight because you want to win. Because you want to prove that you are stronger than everyone else. That you are better."
Kaito shook his head, but his heart pounded in his chest. "No... I—"
"Liar." Shadow-Kaito interrupted.
The word cut through him like a blade.
"You enjoy this, don't you?" Shadow-Kaito pressed on, his silver eyes gleaming. "The thrill of the fight. The rush of domination. The feeling of standing above the weak, of proving that no one can control you." He grinned. "You don't want to protect—you want to rule."
Kaito's fists clenched, his knuckles turning white. "That's not true."
Shadow-Kaito's smirk faded, his gaze sharpening into something far more dangerous. "Then why... did you hesitate?"
Kaito's breath caught in his throat.
The shadow figure chuckled, shaking his head. "See? Even now, part of you knows that I'm right." His form flickered, becoming darker, more ominous. "You fight because you are afraid. Afraid of being powerless again. Afraid of being nothing. So tell me, Kaito Ren..."
The darkness around them twisted violently, swirling like a storm.

A sharp pain shot through Kaito's skull, and suddenly, the abyss shattered.
When he opened his eyes, he was no longer floating in the void. He stood in a barren wasteland, the sky above crimson, the ground cracked and lifeless. The air was heavy with a suffocating presence, pressing down on him like an invisible force.
And standing a few feet away... was himself.
But this time, his doppelgänger was not speaking. He was advancing.
Without warning, Shadow-Kaito lunged forward, blade drawn, aiming directly for Kaito's throat.
Kaito barely managed to react in time, raising his sword to meet the attack. Their blades clashed, sending a shockwave through the air. The force of it sent Kaito skidding back, his feet barely finding purchase on the cracked ground.

And worse... he was smiling.

"Come on!" Shadow-Kaito shouted, his silver eyes blazing with exhilaration. "Fight me like you mean it!"
Kaito gritted his teeth. He couldn't keep this up. His counterpart was stronger, faster, and completely unrestrained. If he kept fighting defensively, he would lose.
Shadow-Kaito lunged again, aiming for his heart.

The Keeper was watching him, his expression unreadable.
"You have confronted yourself," he said. "And you have chosen."
Kaito exhaled shakily, his heart still pounding from the battle.
"Was that... really me?" he asked.
The Keeper nodded. "A part of you. One that will never disappear. But for now, you have proven your resolve."
The Gate of Shadows rumbled, and for the first time, it opened.
Kaito stepped forward.
