Eclipse Online: The Final Descent Chapter 150

The Fork did not die quietly. Where the ground was torn asunder, cold fire ran like blood through split-open veins. The air was filled with static, distorting light into twisted forms. The sky above them swooped in to graze the roofs of the ruins; at other moments, it simply vanished, leaving black holes. Their path was not a path but a thin ribbon of stone nestled between fissures. Beside it, oceans of molten code seethed and hungered to devour anything that dared stray within reach. Mika took the lead this time. She walked hesitantly, but her face had set in an expression nearly of anger. She had lost her bow, yet she trailed her hands halfway up as if to create light between them. It was obstinacy that drove her forward, not belief. Kael tagged along behind her, his gait stiff, unstable. He touched a hand to his temple at regular intervals, fighting something inside him. His sigils shone softly beneath his skin, but the fire of them danced like a candle flame blown by the wind. Nyra hung back, folded wings tight, her silver eyes guarding the cracks. Little was she said, but her presence kept them stable, each step deliberated, each glance weighing danger against possibility. ᴛʜɪs ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ɪs ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ʙʏ NoveI★Fire.net And Kaito walked at the fore, scythe poised on his shoulders, mark on his chest pulsing with each beat of the Root’s awakening. The Fork lived within him, earth shaking slightly whenever his foot came down on rock. He hated it. He could feel the world around him reacting to him—and he could not be certain it was not the other way round. They kept walking for what seemed like hours, the path stretching on with no end in sight. Just when Kael’s legs began to ache from the endless steps, Mika came to an abrupt stop. She halted so quickly that Kael, lost in his own thoughts, almost crashed right into her. "Look," she said, pointing out. The gap yawned wider at the horizon, but between two fallen spires was an arch of unbroken rock, a strip of order amidst disorder. The space beyond glimmered with a faint light, as if it were shying from falling. Kael’s eyes angled, eyes squinting into the static. "A tether-point. A residual anchor. It might still be there." "Or not," Nyra answered, voice calm. "The nearer we get, the harder it will fight us. You know that." Kaito did not speak. His gaze was on the shimmer. It was a heartbeat. A door beating in sync with his own. They inched up, warily. The fissures widened with each step, so they were forced to leap from boulder to boulder. The air stagnation burned, biting against skin, hair erect. Mika nearly stumbled once, her foot suspended above the broken edge of a shattered ledge, but Kael caught out, steadying her. By the time they reached the base of the arch, the shimmer had spread wide across the ground, thin and messy like a worn-out pool of light. It wasn’t a portal—not yet. Instead, it felt like a meeting point, a place where the tearing apart of the Fork brushed against something higher. Something vast and powerful lingered above, greater than the broken scar that stretched before them. It was as if the ruin here had become a doorway in waiting, a threshold that had not fully opened but was already reaching toward what lay beyond. "This is it," Kael growled, voice rough with exhaustion. "But..." "But it won’t open for us without a fight," Nyra finished. Kael nodded. "The Fork is collapsing in on itself. The tether resists. To open it up, we’ll have to give it more than power. It’ll require a pattern. A resonance." Mika’s eyes flitted uncertainly. "Resonance? You mean—" "Yes," Kael interrupted. He looked at Kaito. "You feel it too, don’t you? That throb. It’s not inside you—it’s inside here. If anything can push that cleft wide enough for us to squeeze through, it’s you." Kaito’s hands knotted in fists around the scythe. No sooner had Kael finished speaking than the Root’s whisper flared in his chest. [YES. THROUGH YOU. WE REMEMBER THE WAY.] His jaws hurt. He wanted to refuse, to spit it back out at him and deny. But the tether-point shone in anticipation, and he could feel the truth in Kael’s words. The Root was tied to this world. He was tied to the Root. Which meant freedom was only accessible through him. Nyra moved forward, her gaze not wavering. "If we utilize you as the key, it will not be pure. The Root will try to slip through with us." Mika’s voice broke in, biting, desperate. "Then we don’t use him! We discover some other method—there has to be another." Kael’s expression twisted. "There isn’t. Not with the Fork deteriorating so rapidly. With each second we hesitate, the opening lessens. Before we know it, it’ll seal completely." Mika shook her head violently, tears springing at the corners of her eyes. "You can’t ask him to risk that! If the Root gets through—" Kaito spoke before anyone else could. His voice was low, rough, final. "If this is the way, then I’ll do it." Mika turned on him, horrified. "Kaito—" He met her gaze, violet light burning faintly beneath the skin. "If I don’t," he told her, "we all perish here. Maybe the whole world dies with us." She stepped back, hit. Nyra’s fingers steadied her shoulder, but her own expression was blank. Kaito stepped closer to the tether-point. The glow grew stronger, rippling at his nearness. He held up his hand, and the burn on his chest sparked, purple flames of vines writhing up his throat, down his arm. The Root answered at once. [YES. OPEN. REMEMBER.] The seam pulsed, widening. Kaito clenched his teeth, driving his will into the resonance, attempting to tap only just enough to open the tether, not a centimeter more. His muscles creaked, dew forming on his skin, each nerve afire. The scythe trembled in his hands as though it were alive. Behind him, Mika clutched her chest, whispering his name. Kael etched glowing sigils into the ground, trying to keep the rift closed. Nyra drew her sword, darkness flame-hot, ready to strike if the Root would attempt to push through. The seam widened even more. The radiance grew into a breach—no longer a ripple, now an entrance. Through it, they glimpsed something beyond: a corridor of light, broken but unbroken. Hope flickered in Mika’s eyes. And then the Root laughed inside Kaito’s head. [NOT ENOUGH. GIVE MORE. OR NOTHING PASSES.] The tether struggled back, quivering, and prepared to snap closed again. Agony ripped through him, his chest afire with fire. He bellowed, staggering forward. "Kaito!" Mika cried out, running to him, but Nyra held her back. "Don’t—if you break his concentration, we’re finished." "But it’s killing him!" Nyra didn’t blink. "It’s killing all of us if he loses it." Kaito fell to his knees, slamming one hand into the rock, his eyes cracking apart in shards of light. He could feel the Root pressing down on him now, pushing its rhythm through his body. If he opened fully, the tether would tear wide. They could escape. But the Root could escape too. His choice cut like a blade: resist and behold the seam seal eternally—or open himself, and perhaps unleash the Architect who never perished. The scythe pulsed in his hand, screaming for its freedom. His heart thudded to the rhythm of inevitability. He raised his head, chest gasping, eyes burning violet. The Fork shuddered about them. The tether exploded. "won’t be your vessel." With a roar, he plunged the scythe into the stone. The sign on his breast scorched, not in submission, but rebellion. He forced the Root’s vibration out, not letting it surround him, not letting it course through him, but distorting it—shattering it—twisting it into something that it had not meant to be. The cord screamed. The seam tore wide, spilling light over the devastation. The corridor beyond gaped open, trembling. Mika’s eyes widened, her tears streaming down her face in one river. "He did it—" Kael staggered, hacking up blood, but his sigils were still there. "Move! Now!" Nyra’s blade cut the air. "Go!" Mika first, staggering through the opening on a sob of relief. Kael behind, his form stuttering as it shoved but stayed. Nyra hung back by the door, her gaze locking with Kaito’s. "You hold it," she stated. Not a question. An order. He nodded, chattering breath, light incandescent around him. "Then I’ll hold you," she whispered, and she stepped through. Kaito remained last, the scythe driven into the stone, the resonance tearing his body apart. The Root screamed in his chest. [YES. OPEN. LET US THROUGH.] His jaw locked. His vision blurred. "Not you," he rasped. "Never you." And with a final surge, he wrenched the scythe free, hurling himself through the breach. The light swallowed him. The Fork howled behind, collapsing in silence.
