Echoterra: Rise of the Verdant King Chapter 13

After the chaos of memory, revelation, and that cursed return of consciousness... silence was a mercy I didn't take for granted. Not anymore. I threw myself into expansion; pushing, growing, dominating every inch I could because I knew that was the only way I could survive the cruel crucible of this world. Grow, evolve, and dominate by all means. The thorns obeyed. The vines listened. I could feel my roots spreading wider, deeper than ever before. Every centimeter earned was a silent scream against this world. [System Notification!] [Territorial Growth Achieved: 9.3 square meters.] [WARNING: You are nearing the domain radius of an external entity.] [Territorial Instinct: DANGER!] By now, I was already used to the constant stream of threats; plantoid predators, invaders, but seeing a system notification related to a new threat never failed to startle me and put me on edge. I didn't have a human heart anymore, but I swear something in me skipped. I groaned. 'What is it this time?' My roots stopped moving. Every strand froze, alert and listening. The soil... something in it throbbed. Not metaphorically, literally. A rhythm. A pulse. Like a beast's heartbeat; slow, deep, and monstrous. My instincts flared with adrenaline even as my brain geared into overdrive, trying to ascertain who and what the new enemy was. By now, I was no longer the inexperienced flora I once was. I have survived, killed, fed, and thrived; I was a ruler now. And yet, I couldn't help the sudden panic that surged through me. Maybe it was because I still couldn't tell what the new intruder was. Even in my panic, I reacted. I sent out a Warn; a primal, instinctual scream through the vines. Red pulses flared across my territory. Thorns sharpened. Everything screamed 'Mine!' Stay out. Die if you cross me. And for a second, it worked. I waited; tense, strung so tight I thought I might tear. I barely reacted in time before a mass of scale and armor tore through the ground like a missile. I glimpsed it through my senses; the jagged head, the rusted-black plating, the rows of grinding, pulsing muscles under stone-like skin. [WARNING: You have encountered a Wandering Apex Predator: Gorehowl Vurm!] [Type: Subterranean serpent-beast.] [Threat Level: Ambush predator.] [Features: Armored headplate, drills through soil, detects vibrations like a mole. Prefers soft, expanding terrain.] Maybe it was because of my ability, Root Web, but for the first time, the system showed me so much about an enemy I was supposed to face. Maybe it was because I already glimpsed it through Root Web, but the system went as far as showing me its features. And what I saw? It did very little to calm the panic surging through me. To hell with happiness. 'A Gorehowl Vurm huh?!' I growled. I didn't name it. The system gave me a clean file on it. But even without it, I already knew the moment I glimpsed it. I knew its name like I knew my own. Something ancient. Something wrong. The sound it made wasn't a roar. It was a mechanical scream; like iron screaming against bone. It tore through my mind, dragging terror behind it like a scythe through wheat. And then, just like that, it vanished. Back beneath the earth. But the soil vibrated. It was coming for me. Not for my thorns, not for my outer territory... I cursed and slammed my thoughts into my roots, reinforcing, tightening, binding together the defenses around the center of my being. My energy burned; every fiber of me shrieked to protect it. The ground beneath me shattered. The Vurm tore through directly beneath my central root cluster. I screamed; something half-human, half-plant, wholly desperate as I was flung into the air, torn from the ground like a weed in a storm. The pain wasn't physical, it was territorial. Like someone cracked open my skull and scooped out the marrow. I hit the ground hard; vision spiraling, roots screaming, vital threads severed. My limbs trembled. My thorns pulsed, uncertain even as my roots were already digging back into the ground fueled by survival instinct. The Vurm coiled nearby, above ground now. Its body was a winding horror, thick as a truck, plated like a tank, twitching with unnatural life. No eyes. It didn't need them. It felt everything; every breath, every move, just like I felt with my Root Web. If I twitched; if I moved one root, it would strike. [System Notification!] [WARNING: Territory compromised!] [Core stability at 47%.] [Begin emergency response protocol: ROOTWELL FORMATION?] My roots folded inward, weaving a cocoon around my wounded center. Not perfect. Not enough to stop another hit, but maybe enough to delay it. And still, the predator waited. It was careful enough; a patient assassin. I didn't breath, didn't move, every part of me locked in place. A deep, ancient part of me whispered. 'This is how you die'. No glory. No victory. Just death beneath the earth, unknown, unloved, and forgotten. But beneath that fear, beneath the shaking dread and the wild spiraling thoughts, something sharper stirred. Not grief. Not hopelessness. A familiar friend... spite. I wasn't going to die . If this monster wanted me gone, it would have to try a hell of a lot harder. With my roots out of the ground, I was now on a time limit. I was dying, no matter how slowly, but it didn't matter. I clenched my fists, stem, claws digging into the dirt around me. I didn't care that I was broken, bleeding chlorophyll, and scared shitless. 'I'm not done yet,' I whispered to myself in the silence. 'Come again, bastard'.
