Having reached the village before sunset, Wufu slowed her pace, munching on a piece of sesame candy while leisurely admiring the scenery as she walked home.

The children immediately swarmed around her, shouting in unison.
“No pushing, no shoving, line up,” Wufu said in high spirits, handing out one candy to each child, her eyes crinkling with laughter.
The kids who received the candy were even happier than her.
In poor families, and not during festivals, when would they ever get such treats?
“Wufu, you little wretch, you still dare to strut around the village?”
A sharp reprimand made Wufu turn her head, only to see a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old girl standing behind her, hands on hips, wearing a red hairpin with twin braids and a floral skirt, looking down on her with a mixture of arrogance and contempt.

“Apologize,” Wufu, taller by half a head, her gaze sharp as she looked down at her cousin.
“I certainly won’t…” Xiuer began, but when she met Wufu’s gaze, her pupils shrank in fear, her heart pounding wildly, an instinct to retreat rising within her.

“Let go,” tears began seeping from Xiuer’s eyes.
Expressionless, Wufu stared at her.
