The stairway shuddered beneath their boots as they descended. Mist thickened with each step—cold, wet, almost liquid—as if the air itself was bleeding. Every breath tasted of rust and salt, and the stone walls groaned like hollow drums.
And through it all, one whisper lingered. Clear. Sharp. Undeniable.
Her foot hesitated on the step. That voice. It wasn’t an echo of the chamber, nor a trick of the mist. No—she would have known it anywhere.
Her pulse raced, frost stirring unconsciously at her fingertips.
Akira glanced back, katana balanced against his shoulder, brows furrowing at her stillness.
“You stopped. What’s wrong?”
Elira’s lips pressed into a thin line, her violet eyes storming. “...Nothing.”
But Kuro had already seen the tremor in her hands. His emberlight gaze lingered on her longer than it should have. He didn’t speak—not yet—but his silence carried its own weight.

Akira caught him mid-slide, grunting as his boots dug into the stone. His eyes shot to Elira—now wrapped in spiraling frostfire, wings of broken glass spreading from her back. Her gaze was hollow, consumed by the Seal’s whispers.

Kuro staggered upright, emberblade blazing brighter, jaw tight. “Then we pull her back.”
Akira gave him a sharp look. “And if she doesn’t want to come back?”
Kuro’s reply was iron. “Then we remind her who she is.”
From the crimson depths rose a towering figure clad in regal armor etched with frost and flame. His face was half-decayed, but his eyes burned violet—eyes Elira knew better than her own reflection.

The apparition’s voice rolled like thunder, shaking the spires.

Elira stepped forward, frostfire crowning her form like a coronation flame. Her voice was hollow. “...If sacrifice is what it takes, then take me.”
Kuro’s heart dropped. “Elira!”
He charged. Emberblade met spectral steel, the clash ringing like a cathedral bell. The apparition’s strength was overwhelming, forcing Kuro back with each strike.
Akira lunged in, blades slashing across the king’s form. But every wound sealed instantly, shadows stitching it whole.

The fight was merciless.
