Twilight at Mihua Port
A blazing orange-red light cast over the abandoned factory at Mihua Port. The sky was painted in brilliant, melancholic hues. Beautiful—but with a lingering sorrow.
Akemi Miyano pulled up in her car, checked the address, and stepped inside.
Rust had eaten through the factory's corrugated ceiling. Sunlight pierced through the holes like silent spotlights, filtering into dust-laden air.
"Where are you? I'm here, like we agreed!"
Her voice rang out in the hollow space, echoing through steel and silence.
Two figures entered the factory—Gin, tall and snake-like, and Vodka, broad and looming. Both had their hands in their pockets.
Gin's cold eyes narrowed playfully.
Face-to-Face with Death
Though her unease was tangible, her composure remained intact.
"Why did you kill them?"
Her voice was steady.
"That's just how we operate,"Gin said flatly, as Vodka chuckled beside him.
To Gin, murder was no more emotional than typing code—it was procedural.
"Hand over the money."
"I hid it elsewhere. If you want it, show me my sister. Bring her here."
"That was our deal, wasn't it? One billion yen, and we both leave the Organization!"
Gin laughed cruelly. Hands still buried in his coat, he began to approach.
Vodka followed clumsily behind.
Shiho Miyano was never part of the bargain. The Organization would never let her go.
Akemi's hope shattered.
Gin didn't answer with words.
"Last chance. Where's the money?"
She raised her own weapon.
"Kill me, and you'll never find it."
Her defiance was fearless—but to Gin, it was laughable.
Two shots. One from Gin, one from Akemi.
Her bullet missed—just barely—but she clipped Vodka's hat, sending it flying. His flat head now exposed.
Gin's bullet found its mark.
Akemi Miyano collapsed.
Crimson spread quickly across her chest, soaking into her clothes.
"Didn't think she had the guts to shoot,"Gin muttered, mildly impressed.
Vodka touched his exposed head, still rattled.
Gin ordered Vodka to check her body.
He found a safe key in her pocket.
"She's dead for sure."
With that, the two men vanished from the factory.
Shortly after, another car arrived in haste.
A man stepped out silently, scooped up Akemi's body, and rushed her into the vehicle.
As the car sped away, it passed an elementary school boy skating down the road—Conan Edogawa.
It was after 9 PM when Hayashi Yoshiki's phone rang.
"Mr. Hayashi, the operation's finished. The young lady is out of immediate danger."
"Thank you, Dr. Narumi. You've done me a great favor."
"It's nothing… I'm honored to help, really."
"Still unconscious. She lost a lot of blood—but fortunately, you had access to plasma."
"She should regain consciousness tomorrow, but she'll need bed rest for a while."
"Understood. I'll rely on you to watch over her during recovery."
Narumi Asai, a graduate of Tokyo Medical University and a skilled surgeon, had successfully performed the emergency operation—even outside a hospital setting.
But what Narumi Asai didn't know was this:
Akemi Miyano couldn't die—yet.
Insurance in the Death Note
Hayashi Yoshiki had written:
Akemi MiyanoCause of Death: Peaceful in her sleep.
>At 17:46 on August 9th, she arrives at the Mihua Port factory.During a confrontation, she is shot and enters a state of suspended animation.
>She is rescued and survives surgery.
>Returns to normal life.
>Dies peacefully at 23:33 on August 19th.*
Gin couldn't kill her. Her death was already scheduled—under controlled conditions.
Even the date was intentional.
Although August 19th might seem just 10 days away from August 9th, Yoko Okino helped Hayashi calculate: when you account for natural number alignment, August 19th effectively lies hundreds of days beyond it in Death Note logic.
In other words, Akemi Miyano's life had been extended—by hundreds of days.
Hayashi Yoshiki considered further strategies:
End Conan's storyline.If the calendar shifted from August to September, October, etc., August 9th might be skipped, possibly invalidating her predetermined death.
Hypnotize Akemi.If he could change her self-identified name, the Death Note might no longer affect her—since it only works on a person's true name. But whether this nullifies existing entries is unknown.
Either way, he would wait until she recovered to proceed.
For now, the matter was settled.
