Rebecca’s story
I just got home, but I shouldn’t have gotten in his shower. I didn’t even know Dominic was home. He told me he wouldn’t be. I called Logan as soon as I got out and postponed the meeting. I called Sam instead. She arrived at the same time I did.
“My God, Becca, what happened to you?” she asked me worriedly, seeing me arrive with wet hair and totally confused. I didn’t answer her anything, but walked shakily towards the door. I barely unlocked it.
I left the documents on the dining room table and Sam followed me quietly. With a towel, I soaked my hair a little and immediately made two coffees.
The storm Dominic stirred up inside me was giving me a hard time breathing. I was devastated and hurt at the same time. But if I was to be honest, I never felt fear during what happened. On the contrary, I experienced the most consuming desire ever. I just knew he would not hurt me. He loved me. Even without telling me the three magic words, I could sense that. And the whole time I was in his arms, naked, I was going crazy with lust. One wrong move, one sign from me. I wanted him so badly in that shower and it could have ended in a whole other way, in a way we both wanted.
“Do you think Dominic loves me?” I suddenly asked out of the blue. Samantha’s eyes widened in amazement. The question didn’t really make sense. Sam had never met him. She only knew what she’d heard from me.
“I don’t know what to tell you Becca... I don’t know the guy...” then there was a moment of silence while Sam reflected on what I had asked, what she had answered and how I had gotten home. “Becca, don’t tell me the son of a bitch did something to you.” I didn’t allow her to have any other impure thoughts, especially since I didn’t know what was going on with me around him, either.
“No, Sam, nothing I wouldn’t want as well...” Only my answer was a little ambiguous, but it was enough for her to understand that something had indeed happened. My eyes suddenly filled with burning tears and rolled down my face, framing my cheeks. With huge sobs, I barely looked up at Sam. I knew I had scared her.
“My God, Rebecca, what has he done to you? Did he... If only I had him here, in my face, I would have told him some words!”
“No, no, no...”
I rushed to correct her thoughts and words again, because that wasn’t the case here.
“Don’t go there, please. He, how shall I say, made a move on me...”
“And you’re crying because...”
“It all happened in the shower. I went to his house to get the last of my things and documents and thought I’d take a shower after my morning run. I knew he was not home, he told me so on the phone”
“Okay, that was a good idea. What role did he play in this story?”
“Well, in a way he...”
“Oh, come on, Becca. Don’t tell me he assaulted you, because I swear to God, he won’t live to tell the tale”
“Yes, and no.” Even I realized I had talked nonsense.
“What do you mean, yes and no? Yes, or no?”
“That’s exactly my point. I don’t know at what point he got in the shower with me, fully clothed, and I was naked and so vulnerable. I kind of liked it...”
“What? What the hell are you talking about?” Sam’s voice rose a couple of tones higher.
“I know it sounds crazy, but this man is really messing with my head. At first, he was like a beast or something, saying things about Logan, and then he went gentle, kissing me. And then he stopped”
“And what was the problem, then?”
“Somehow, I wish he hadn’t stopped”
“Oh, God! You’re in over your head with this man”
The truth behind that statement made me shudder, but at the same time, my heart skipped a beat. Coming from another person, it was like music to my ears. I truly was in love with Dominic. I no longer had any doubts about it.
“Is it that obvious?”
“Baby, your eyes sparkle every time you talk about him, your voice quivers every time you say his name. What more signs do you need that this isn’t a game? This is love and if you don’t do something about it, someone else will. I’m sure you don’t want that, do you?”
Sam always wanted the best for me, and Dominic was the perfect man. It took me a while to realize that, but now I know what I was doing and thinking. I loved this man, and I was going to do everything in my power to be with him. Although there were many obstacles.
When I chose this life, I never thought I would fall in love. As far as I was concerned, it was totally out of the question. But things didn’t always work out the way I wanted them to. I could also understand Dominic for not leaving me there in danger. To be honest with myself, I didn’t stand a chance. They were wild beasts. I had no chance of survival. It was still unclear to me how there were such enormous wolves and how Dominic could handle them all. But that was another investigation.
From what Logan had investigated and learned about Tom, the connection he had with Dominic’s family intrigued me. Tom was no saint, and if someone was after me now, they were definitely after him. I also didn’t know how far that connection went. That was exactly what Logan and I were working to find out. And that Dominic was there and ruined their plans by saving me that would make him a target. So, until I found out who Tom really was, there was no getting close to Dominic. I had to play hardball and keep him at bay until it was safe. “Okay, you mentioned this man’s name a few days ago, Logan? From what you’re telling me, Dominic is jealous, my dear. I’m sure he wouldn’t have hurt you.” Sam continued to find reasons for Dominic’s bizarre behavior.
“He has no reason to, he’s just a co-worker in the agency.”
“Yes, but he doesn’t know that. He saw you talking to him and reacted accordingly.”
“You’re right, but I can’t tell him. And you know why. Sam, I still don’t know what the significance of Tom and Dominic’s connection is. Hell, I’m thinking the wolf attack wasn’t so random either. I’m getting paranoid, but until I find a connection between the two of them, Dominic is in danger. Tom wasn’t a saint and I know whatever was going on around him didn’t look good. If that attack wasn’t random, he saved me and that wasn’t part of their plan. I can’t expose him like that and put his life in danger.”
“I understand, my dear, but I also understand that Dominic doesn’t seem so helpless either. And that you felt a simple wolf's attack as an ordered one, I don’t know...” I still couldn’t reveal what Dominic had told me about those wolves. It sounded like something out of a fairy tale and I didn’t believe it either. But it was clear something wasn’t right here.
“Even so, my duty is to protect him. Until I sort this out, there can be nothing between Dominic and me”, I concluded, more determined than ever that this was exactly what should happen. It was going to be hard to keep him away, but I had no other solution.
“I understand. This is your decision. I hope you can also do it. Because from what you tell me about him...” I hated it when Sam was right. But she really was.
I would have to find a way and a reason not to see him, not to show up in his life. Or if I did, I would have to pretend I didn’t know him. But how would I do that?
And just then an idea came to my mind that was as far-fetched as it was crazy.
“And that’s where you’re going to come in, you’re going to help me”
“Me? How can I help you?” Since she didn’t know my thoughts yet, she seemed excited. She’s in for a shock.
“You don’t know Dominic and he doesn’t know you, right?” I explained my plan that Sam definitely wouldn’t agree with, but it was worth a shot.
“Right...” she replied with a low half-mouth. She knew me so well that she realized the rest of the plan wouldn’t please her. Still, she was listening.
“Okay, that’s good so far. In order for me to investigate freely, I’ll have to keep Dominic at a distance. Do you agree with me?” I was stalling and didn’t understand why. Anyway, this would shock her when she would hear. Eventually, I would still tell her.
“I agree with you, but why do I feel I won’t like this? Tell me exactly what I have to do, Becca!” OK, it was now or never. Anyway, I had no other solution and no one else to help me with this. And I knew I’d have to do some work to clarify the situation after she’d definitely say no.
“Big thing you won’t have to do. Just get to know him and keep him away from me.” I was still talking in circles.
“Meeting him will be easy, but keeping him away? I don’t think I’ll follow you from here.”
“It’s simple. Spend time with him, hang out with him, find common topics of conversation. Somehow make him... fall for you.”
