They got to the apartment to meet another surprise, Luna Tammy was just stepping out of the room.
She closed the door behind her just as she noticed them, freezing up in shock.
"Lost?" Asher asked, the question more of a threat.
Tammy self-consciously patted her perfect bun, "Of course not," She smiled beguilingly. "I was just making sure that everything was in order."
"Right," Asher deadpanned, "That’s why you need a spare key for the guests’ rooms."
"When you say anything like that, it sounds scheming, Mafia King Asher." She said coyly. "Here, I’ll even give you the spare key-"
Caspian snatched it right out of her hand, "Thank you," He said through gritted teeth, ignoring the clear recognition on her face.
Luna Tammy couldn’t hide her shock at how forward he had been. "I’ll... um, take my leave now. Have a nice stay." She muttered and quickly made herself scarce, hurrying off.
When they got in, Asher went through the room again to make sure that no bugs had been set up this time.
"What do you think she was doing?" Asher asked him after confirming that the room was clean.
Caspian frowned, Luna Tammy never liked him much, even while his parents were still alive.
He always went out of his way to avoid her so he didn’t know much about her.
"Probably proof of who I am," He muttered, his frown still on his face.
Perhaps it had been a bad idea to come along after all, there was no reason for ’Caspian’ to come back to Moonstone.
He hoped that he hadn’t already ruined their chances of uncovering the truth.
Jael stood outside the hotel he had spent the night in.
In the dew of the early morning, smoke drifted up from the tip of his lit cigarette, as he drank coffee out of a paper cup.
He had already sent some of the men to the police station to pose as journalists trying to get information about the accident that killed Caspian’s parents.
He doubted they would get anything useful because the little town of Moonstone kept the death of their previous Alpha and Luna real quiet.
He had the most important job, investigating the auto repair shop that handled the car.
Jael already tracked it down but it was too late to drop in on them the day before.
He waited until the sun came out before heading for the shop, he wanted to make sure he caught as many employees in his net as possible.
So as the town came alive, the sun heating up the morning chill, he walked into a decently sized auto repair shop.
He walked up to the first group of people he saw, they were working on a car held off the ground; the car was missing a couple of doors.
"Need something?" A gruff man with graying hair spoke, he held a toothpick between his lips.
"I do, yeah," Jael said bluntly, "I’m looking for some answers."
The man stopped what he was doing and sized him up, the worker on the other side of the car stopping as well.
The only person who didn’t move was the man working underneath the car.
"As long as you’re asking about cars, you’ll find them." He shrugged.
"It’s a car alright," Jael puffed out a cloud of smoke, "I’m looking for answers regarding the car that Alpha Victor and Luna Paris drove."
His words caused a tense silence to fall on the men, the clanking of the man under the car stopping abruptly.
"You a journalist?" The gruff middle-aged man nodded in his direction.
Jael had taken off his holsters for the trip but that didn’t include his guns - he looked nothing like a journalist.
He kept a straight face however, his dress shirt rolled up to show off the tattoos on his arms. "Yeah."
"Drew? Drew? Get out from under the fucking car, Andrew." The man scolded sharply.
The young Beta on the pallet under the car reluctantly slid out, his overall stained with grease, straw brown hair tousled.
"What?" He snapped back.
"Are your ears filled with grease? Didn’t you hear the visitor?" The older man grinded his gears. "He wants to know about the accident, go talk to him."
Andrew’s irritated expression turned into a black scowl, and although he looked like that was the very last thing he wanted to do, he got to his feet.
"Come with me," He invited Jael, walking off to the side.
Jael followed, staying silent the entire time as he watched the scene unfold.
"What do you want to know?" Andrew asked impatiently, steadfastly not making eye contact.
"Do you get a lot of people asking about the accident?" Jael cocked a brow.
"That’s none of your fucking business." Andrew bitched.
Now that Jael could get a proper look at him, he was a little older than he first seemed. He was just lanky, and his boyish haircut and clean-shaven face didn’t do him any favors.
"Right." Jael said shortly, "Your auto repair shop handled the car after the accident, right?"
"And we gave the complete report to the cops so there’s no additional information I can get you," Andrew said snappishly.
"Right, right," Jael went on patiently, unfazed by his rudeness.
There seemed to be a rehearsed bit for this, and it made him wonder once more, just how many people had come seeking answers.
"Besides it happened almost a decade ago, so I couldn’t provide the records even if I wanted to." Drew went right on.
"Understandable." Jael didn’t push, "By any chance, do you know what auto shop Alpha Victor frequented before the accident."
Andrew went rigid at that, his light brown eyes darkening. "No."
That was a clear sign that he wouldn’t be getting any more answers out of him, and he was right because Andrew took a step back that.
"I’d recommend that you leave the store if you’re not buying or fixing anything, I’ve got a lot to do." He immediately ended the conversation, returning to the car he had been working on.
