Davian and Lake already had their luggage sent to the mansion, so by the time they got home, their luggage had already been taken up.
There was a lot to say, but there was even more to do the next day. Lake was thoroughly jetlagged from the trip, so as soon as they got into the foyer, Davian swept him off his feet and stole him away.
Rosie wasn’t surprised by this, hanging back while Davian started up the stairs. "Aren’t you guys hungry?" She called after Davian.
She already had the kitchen stocked, she didn’t cook often, but she could quickly prepare something for them both.
"We ate on the plane," Lake’s response floated down.
That was satisfactory enough for Rosie, she slowly made her way up the stairs after them. She would also go to bed early, things were about to completely change for her.
Rosie was woken up in the morning by the door to her room opening, Lake’s bed-head poking in.
It reminded her of when Caspian would check in on her, but it wasn’t the same. She was merely a visitor at the Knight’s mansion, but here felt like home.
"Did I wake you?" Lake smiled, a hand placed on his waist.
Rosie sat up, her fiery hair in a worse state of disarray. "You didn’t," She replied, glancing at the table clock beside her bed.
It was later than she had been expecting, she must not have realized just how tired she was last night.
"Davian had to leave a short while ago," Lake slowly walked in, wearing his husband’s shirt and pumpkin-patterned pajama bottoms. "Want to cook breakfast with me?"
Rosie shot to her feet with bright eyes, surprised that Davian hadn’t snuck away to cook for his mate before leaving. She could already imagine the disgruntled expression on his face.
"Yes! Just give me a moment to wash my..." The rest of her words were muffled because she had already ducked into the bathroom.
Lake sat down on the edge of Rosie’s messy bed, the sweet but spicy scent of cinnamon filled the air around. It was comforting, familiar.
Davian had slept in just like he had, Lake had been woken up when his mate got out of bed.
Asher had just called, he needed to head down to the other Mafia King’s club so they could make plans.
Lake hadn’t protested even a little bit, eager to go right back to sleep. He had only just stumbled out of bed, ravenous, so he went right to find Rosie.
They didn’t have to do a lot for breakfast because they would soon be heading over to Caspian’s for lunch.
Rosie hopped out of the bathroom in record time, wearing a peach-colored silk nightgown and fuzzy socks, the tips of her hair wet from the sink.
They leisurely made their way to the kitchen, the mansion was so quiet that it was easy to forget the size of it for a short while.
Rosie had a lot to say to Lake, filling him in about everything that happened, even though she had already prepared several detailed reports.
She hurried back to her room to get her pad so she could directly show Lake the reports and important documents she had so much to say about.
Lake ended up sitting at the counter again, just like when Davian cooked. He scrolled through documents while Rosie bustled through the kitchen, the smell of perfectly crisp toast and the spices that went into the eggs filled the warm space.
He settled comfortably back into the fast-paced life he was used to living. Honestly, compared to how he lived before Davian, his current position might as well be a vacation.
All he had to do was review documents already prepared by Rosie or the other secretaries, occasionally go for board meetings, and attend the frequent functions the upper class liked to throw.
He truly hoped things didn’t change, he even felt the same about Nikolai. Things were far from perfect, but there was some semblance of peace.
It was a Sunday, so things were slow at Asher’s club. In a rare show of events, he was seated in the club proper instead of his office situated at the back.
Davian strode in, slate gray eyes dark, looking like a human weapon in his fitted muscle shirt and tactical pants.
Asher cocked a brow as the other Mafia walked over, visibly in a foul mood. "I don’t remember saying you couldn’t bring your mate." He was quick to say, although he wouldn’t have recommended taking the pregnant Omega along with them to Nikolai’s casino when tensions were running so high.
"I didn’t plan to." Davian took his seat, jaw clenched.
Asher decided not to continue that line of conversation, moving on to the matters at hand. "The High Council will definitely be keeping an eye on Nikolai, they’ll know we went to find him."
"So what? Suggesting we use disguises?" Davian asked gruffly, but there was a hint of teasing in his voice.
Asher paused so he didn’t blurt out something he would come to regret. "I’m just laying out the scene," He forced himself to say calmly. "It’s in our best interest if the High Council’s watchdogs run back to tell them we’re planning something with Nikolai." He leaned back in his seat, silver rings catching the light.
Davian knew that well enough, fighting the urge to get up and head back to his mansion to cook for his mate. It was quite the whiplash, it felt like just the day before, it was just Lake and him, just them in their own world, nothing coming in between to ruin it...
"Davian? Are you listening to me?" Asher’s voice cut into his self-wallowing. It was strange to hear the other call his name.
Davian rose to his feet in response, "No." He admitted bluntly, "Let’s head to Nikolai’s, save you the trouble of repeating yourself."
Asher rose to his feet, snagged his coat, and went after him. He never imagined that the day would come when he was the sole reasonable one.
Because there was a high chance that Nikolai would not be willing to work with them, the only thing stiffer than his pride was his dogheadedness.
