Rosie was in the lobby to receive them as usual, her clipboard in hand. The secretary would be running the entire Mafia House as well as the companies in their absence and she wasn’t looking forward to it.
Unlike her usually perky self, Rosie looked like a wilted flower, sighing tragically as they piled into the elevator.

Lake patted her shoulder, a fond expression on his face. "We’ll come back soon to take the load off your shoulders."
It didn’t lift Rosie’s spirits, her boss would be gone for a month. Who was she supposed to run reports and tasks through? "Can’t you take me with you?"
Lake shot Davian a nervous look, he couldn’t be mean to his precious secretary.
Davian didn’t have the patience he had for Lake for anyone else, "No. You can go on your vacation when we return." He said bluntly, an arm around his mate.
Rosie expected that response, and she loved her boss but she knew better than to squeeze in the middle of their honeymoon. She was mostly happy they were actually taking this time off, they had also done their best to alleviate the strain she would feel in their absence.
Rosie had been clamoring for a wedding but neither Lake nor Davian were interested in one, and it shouldn’t have been surprising honestly, the two of them would be satisfied with only seeing the other’s face for an eternity.
"I don’t want a vacation," She said, meaning it. She was content with how things were currently, she had a fulfilling job, awesome pay, and bosses who brought her lunch and made sure she got home safe.
More than having to handle everything by herself, Rosie wasn’t looking forward to the month she would have to spend without them, it would be lonely in the company to be all by herself.
After her routine briefing, she went off to get Lake a drink from the cafe across the street. Lake didn’t even ask, it was what they did every day so she did it out of habit.
Lake was seated behind the massive desk, Davian’s warm hands on his shoulders. "Do you think Rosie will be okay?"
Davian was still disgruntled about Rosie wanting to tag along, she was being uncharacteristically greedy. "You already asked Asher to keep an eye out on things for you, and she knows to go right to him if anything happens."
Lake knew that, but he had never seen Rosie so down. Sometimes, he worried if she was a robot because she was always bright-eyed and properly dressed, morning after morning. Very few people in the world were genuinely happy to clock in to work like she was, so it worried him to see her constantly sighing.
Rosie returned shortly with his drink, cutting the conversation off. There were no more in-person visits, at least not until Lake and Davian returned, so anyone seeking an appointment would have to do it over email.
"Want to close early so we can go for ice cream?" Lake asked indulgently when Rosie brought him an armful of files.
Rosie ignored the dark stare from her Mafia King, Davian would have Lake all to himself for an entire month, she wasn’t turning this down for the world. "Yes!"
Angelo finally made a move after sitting immobile on the bed for the longest time, carefully getting off the bed. While he was seated, he had taken the time to study every bit of the room. He knew there were cameras, maybe multiple but he didn’t care for them, if he took them down, he knew that Mafia King Nikolai would only put up more.
He went over to the door, trying the handle. It opened easily to his surprise, his face falling when the door opened right to a hallway full of armed men. Was Mafia King Nikolai underestimating him? Angelo really wanted to die.
The dead-eyed Alpha standing right outside the door seemed to see right through his intentions. "Don’t do it. You can’t escape, and we’ve got orders from the boss not to hurt you."
Angelo glowered up at him, he was shirtless without even the most basic weapon and the hallway was crawling with armed men. He knew that if he made a move, he would most likely be knocked unconscious or stunned, either way, he wouldn’t make it past the first attack.
He stepped back and slammed the door, gritting his teeth. The unlocked door felt like a slap in his face, like Mafia King Nikolai couldn’t even be bothered to go through the trouble.
Spiteful, Angelo made his way over to the windows, it was a twelve-story drop, trying to climb down was out of the question, he could only jump...
The door opened before he could even make up his mind about that, "The boss said not to think about it." The Alpha that had spoken to him before poked his head into the room to say.
Angelo glanced at one of the cameras in the room. He knew they were there, but he didn’t know that Mafia King Nikolai was actively watching him. Without saying a word, he put a leg on the window ledge and hopped out.
Nikolai choked on cigar smoke for the first time in his life, unable to tear his eyes away. Dan dashed over to the window and leaned out, obscuring Nikolai’s view even further.
He knew the assassin was desperate for death, there was no way he survived that plunge. But Nikolai waited, the cigar between his fingers was forgotten, the digits numb like the rest of his body.
Then Dan spoke, "Are you just going to hang there all day?"
Relief coursed through Nikolai, it made his fingers liquid, his cigar dropping to the carpet.
"Fuck off," Angelo’s calm voice responded, it was distant but it was there.
Nikolai slammed the laptop close and shot to his feet, he stomped out the cigar and then swept out, black trench coat billowing.
