Back at the mansion, instead of cooking like Davian would have preferred, he settled for ordering in so that he could remain by Lake’s side the entire time.
No one in their right mind would try to draw a gun on a Mafia King, and it had made Davian get too lax. There was no question that he wouldn’t let this happen again.
He was still shaken, because things could have gone so wrong. He could have... Just thinking about it made his middle lurch.
"Rosie said it was a gang member from MoonShade," Lake recalled what had just happened as they ate lunch.
Davian wasn’t pleased about the conversation topic, he planned to get the necessary information from Rosie, and then he would do some fumigating.
"He seemed to be working alone though," Lake mused as he ate.
Davian’s mood improved a bit when he saw that the Omega’s appetite wasn’t affected, "I’ll deal with it."
Lake had been about to tell Davian not to worry about it when he caught the look in the Alpha’s eyes. It reminded him of the expression he had seen on Davian’s face when he opened the door.
Lake dropped his gaze back to his lunch, fiddling with the food instead of heartily eating. Davian always treated him so well but he never really had the time to think about what the Alpha thought of him.
If it had been Davian in front of the barrel... Lake had to stop there because of how uneasy he suddenly felt, he hadn’t even been this shaken when he was facing imminent death.
Davian was usually observant so on a day one, it meant that he paid attention to every minute reaction and expression on Lake.
"What’s wrong?" He immediately asked as Lake paled, "Are you nauseous? Do you not like the food?"
Lake didn’t know how to say that he had tried imagining Davian in danger and that was why he felt so out of sorts so he just came up with an excuse. "I still feel a bit nauseous."
"Come here," Davian offered without hesitation, holding out his arms.
Lake climbed onto the Alpha’s legs without a second thought, drinking in the scent of dark chocolate. This was a really big reaction considering that he kept telling himself that he only worried about Davian’s safety because he was the father of his child.
That didn’t matter when he was in the safety and warmth of Davian’s arms though, sleep softly pulling him under.
Lake woke up after the sun had gone down, feeling brand new. There was no way to transmit this feeling to Davian though who was just as worried as before.
"Maybe you should take the rest of the week off," Davian was quick to suggest.
They were in the kitchen, Lake had asked for the Alpha to cook dinner so he was currently keeping him company.
"There’s no need for that," Lake turned him down with a smile, soft face propped on a slender hand. "You’re going to be with me, aren’t you?"
Davian sulked, he had already told Lake that he wouldn’t be taking another cooking class so he could keep an eye on him but now he wished he had waited to say it, because he didn’t have a decent rebuttal to that.
"Besides, I don’t always have dangerous appointments," Lake said to reassure him, "Most of my time is spent on reports and business meetings."
"But I still think you should take a day off, to rest, for the baby." Davian played his trump card.
He didn’t regret letting Lake take over the running of the Mafia House, but he did have some dissensions.
"Will you bake me a cake?" Lake asked in turn, catching Davian off guard.
"Or anything you can bake. I’ll eat whatever you make me." Lake said blissfully.
He had slept really well on his nap, which was ironic considering how messy the first half of his day had been. Davian’s scent still clung to his skin, the Alpha scenting him might have had something to do with how well he slept.
Lake knew he wouldn’t be able to go in to work, not the very next workday at least. Even if he managed to get past Davian, Rosie would stop him.
"Deal." Davian quickly agreed.
It was a Friday anyway, regardless of if he had gotten jumped by a psychotic gang member or not, he would have still worked from home on the weekends. It was why he wasn’t too eager to take the rest of the week off, that would essentially mean the entire new week.
He wouldn’t be working at all on the next day however, Caspian had invited him over to meet the wedding planner he had hired. His friend was married but there was still the engagement party to be done.
Dinner was quiet without being awkward, Lake stuffing himself again. He didn’t say it to Davian so that the Alpha wouldn’t insist on cooking every one of their meals by himself but he preferred his cooking to ordering meals.
If Davian took the initiative to hold him this time when they got comfortable on his bed, Lake didn’t point it out, relaxing into it. Even though he often woke up in Davian’s arms, they usually slept apart but now he was tucked in the curve of Davian’s neck.
He was satiated and comfortable, sleep came easy. Sleeping always came easy with Davian.
The next morning was slow, Davian made breakfast, and the both of them drove over to Asher’s place as the sun got brighter in the sky.
It was still morning, the warm sunlight heating up the cold air of the morning.
Lake was no longer planning Caspian’s engagement party, but there was no question of Davian accompanying him regardless especially not after the events of the day before.
Caspian was as beautiful as ever, the Omega waiting impatiently on the front stairs as Lake got down from the car.
Lake let himself be pulled away, getting separated from Davian. He couldn’t say if it was a good or bad thing that Asher was also in the mansion, getting distracted from his worries about Davian by the influx of information from Caspian.
