Rocky got off the phone a few moments later. His reaction went far beyond mere surprise; he was utterly flabbergasted. He walked slowly and took a seat, still deep in thought. It was not every day that the highest authority in his school called and personally begged him, adding that he put in a good word with his sister’s husband on his behalf.
The purpose of the call was simple. It was just to reaffirm that Rocky had received the email, and the Principal wanted to add a ’personal touch’ to the statement. This made Rocky really curious about what had been said to his Principal. It was also vital to the Principal that Rocky accepted the apology.
In the Principal’s office and after he had also got off the call with Rocky, he placed his head of his table. His will and soul had literally jumped off his being and came back.
Ian was not one to be trifled with and the man knew when to back off.
"I hope this is okay! Maybe I should send a card or a gift?" He asked himself. Long story short, his story had been learnt.
Currey left the two to their own, smiling especially at the stupefied look that Rocky displayed.
"Is everything okay?" Ava asked.
"Mmm" Rocky replied before coming to his senses.
Ava had basically taken a backseat in everything that had happened in the Wendover’s house that day. She really did not fit in much; neither was she so much of an alien variable per se. She took in everything, keeping her messy thoughts to herself. For Ava, the night itself had been as bad as it could get.
’Scratch that, these past few days and weeks have been very bad!’ Starting from her brother’s gimmicks, her near violation twice, as well as listening in on her supposed boyfriend cheating on her live through the phone.
’I can’t say that it’s been entirely bad though...’ She thought. However, surprisingly at that moment in time, as funny as it seems, the first ’good’ thing that came into her mind was the young man by her.
Ava had yet to realize that she referred to Rocky as a ’young man’ rather than ’a boy,’ as she had been used to.
In those messy few weeks, she had landed the best job of her life and gotten herself a ’mother figure’ through her best friend. Even her best friend’s seemingly deadly marriage had turned out for the best.
’Well, it was all not that bad if I think about it. Let’s just focus on positive thoughts only!’
Ava finally rested her attention on Rocky.
"Ava, let’s go up to my room. I need to talk to you." Rocky whispered, making Ava shrink back a bit. The action was a little too abrupt, and it attracted the attention of the other men in the room.
Ava flushed. ’I have been to Rocky’s room in the past so what is so bad about this?’ She sighed. ’I can’t let this small boy get under my skin!’
"Can’t we talk about this here?" Ava asked.
Rocky shook his head and then took her hand and dragged her up the stairs amidst the gazes of the two.
They shook their heads and did not bother with Rocky and Ava.
A few moments later, in Rocky’s room, Ava perched at the edge of his bed and asked, "What is it, Rocky?"
’I can’t believe that I let him drag me here...’
"Ian handled all the issues. I think the only thing I must handle is the attorney fees, and that is also no problem because of Ian!"
"Is this what you wanted to talk about?" Ava asked, surprised.
"Of course! You know Sis the best. I think you’ll agree with me that Sis may have saved an emperor in her last life or something. Brother Ian is just too good!"
At that, Ava smiled because she wholeheartedly believed and agreed with Rocky’s statement. Even at this, Ava was starting to get uncomfortable.
’What is wrong with you, Ava!’ She reprimanded herself.
Rocky continued talking, "You know, Ava, do you think that we should teach that Brianna a lesson? I can’t believe that she would make such an attempt on you!"
"Let her be. She has already hit a block the day she met Ian in person!"
"She is no longer a friend to me. Friends do not do that to each other. Who knows what else Brianna would attempt?" Ava added, and indeed, she had chunked Brianna from her head. Ava just had a low tolerance for nonsense.
What was inconceivable to Ava was the fact that Brianna had borne herself to Ian in Shelby’s marital home in an attempt to seduce him. Like, who did that? Go panty-less to your best friend’s home and open up your legs to her husband?
Ava was happy that Ian had not fallen for that.
’At least my attempt seemed to have brought Shelby and Ian closer together!’ Ava smiled as she imagined what may have gone on between the couple the night before, feeling her face heat up slightly.
Unknown to Ava, her eyes had taken in a dreamy look, and that alone enticed Rocky. However, Rocky’s phone dinged yet again right at that moment. He quickly straightened as he had leaned unconsciously towards Ava at that time.
He opened up the message quickly, never taking his attention fully from his Ava.
"What is it?" Ava asked as she leaned close to him, too. Rocky had pulled his chair and placed it near the bed, so it was quite easy for Ava to do that.
"Marvin!?" Ava completed the statement.
There was a picture of a badly tortured Marvin with the caption: "Young Boss, we have him and would not worry the misses ever again!"
Ava was stomped. She had mixed feelings about the message because she recognized the number that had sent it—the same one used by the thugs!
She felt her heart clench.
"No matter what, Marvin is my brother...." Ava had unknowingly said those words out loud. Marvin’s face was swollen almost beyond recognition, and he looked to have been beaten and tortured to an inch of his life. A lone tear rolled down Ava’s face and she quickly cleaned it.
Rocky almost jumped back in surprise and then frowned.
’What is so good about this useless brother of hers that she would have this many sentiments towards him after all he has taken her through?’
Rocky wisely did not say anything to Ava, though.
"I’ll work and pay back the money!" Ava said as she pulled out her phone and started texting the thugs.
"What are you doing?" Rocky asked and pulled her phone away from her.
Ava glared at Rocky, but he was unperturbed. He asked, "Is he that important to you?"
Ava did not respond but looked directly at Rocky, "Give my phone back!"
"Ava, please! Do you want him to get you killed before you come to your senses?"
"Ok! Before I give you the phone back, promise me something."
Ava reached out for the phone but Rocky stood up tall and held the phone up above his head.
"Ava, listen! I love you and I am not going to let someone like that make you lose your livelihood and your life just because he thinks he and get away with the family crap!"
"Let me complete my statement! Can you let me handle this?"
"Why would I? You are just the brother of my friend-"
Rocky was not put off by that at all, he just smiled, "You are my future wife! You will come to terms with this later. However, I can give you the funds to pay for -"
"I don’t want your money!"
"Let me finish, Ava."
"Think of it as a loan, but you need to understand that Marvin will rake in more debts even if you pay this off! You are usually firm and sound in your decisions, but why are you like a puppet when it comes to Marvin! He is not worth it!"
That was enough to make Ava pause. It was very true that Marvin would likely bring in more debts if his slate was wiped clean.
Ava sighed and stopped trying to reach for the phone, "what do you propose then?"
"Your brother needs to be taught a lesson!"
Even though Ava did not like the sound of that, she still asked, "How?"
"Leave it to me. I will pay the money back to the thugs -"
Rocky quickly said, "It’ll be a loan, so you can pay it back at your own pace...."
"A year!... I’ll pay it back in a year!"
Rocky sighed and nodded, knowing that, that was the only way she would agree.
"I agree! But I’ll let the thugs teach him a little lesson.... After that you can consider a rehab or a sort to send him to get him clean...."
Ava listened attentively as Rocky detailed his plan and she could not help but marvel at it.
Rocky smiled and then asked, "So, you’re okay with me handling it?"
Ava reluctantly agreed, knowing that it was all for the best while asking herself why she was letting Rocky get more into her affairs.
Just then, Rocky’s phone rang yet again. This time, he received it on loudspeaker, his mood went somber right then.
"Young master Rocky, it’s your father’s attorney. I am calling about the money-" It was not so much about the request but the tone he used. The trial was that morning, and it was barely mid-afternoon, but he already called for his money. It was also in moments like those that he resented his mother. If Clara was capable, she would have been the one responsible for such.
"Hold on!" Rocky opened his bank app simultaneously, flinching at the amount in there.
He quickly transferred the required amount on the phone.
"Check your account, Mr attorney...."
The attorney’s voice changed to a pleasant tone, "Thank you for th-"
"I believe that we are done, right? Mr attorney? Also, from now on, we will not be needing your services."
".... But I am a retainer, Mr Rockwell...."
".... You were a retainer. Your services are not needed again. My father is in prison, so we will not need your legal services again."
"If there is nothing else, then bye." Then Rocky hung up.
Ava gazed at him in a new light. At the time that he talked to the lawyer, Rocky was like a businessman handling an important case.
’What am I thinking about?’ Ava asked herself.
